Rockstar Games’ next open-world game will have a map twice the size of the one in GTA 5, according to Rob Nelson, co-director of Rockstar North. Vice City, the central city, is twice the size of Los Santos, and the suburbs around it reach 11 times the area of GTA 5’s map. The game is set to release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Protagonists want to leave the criminal life behind
The story follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, who are trying to get out of crime. Nelson said many players see GTA as a fantasy of power, while the couple wants to live their relationship and avoid the fate of Bonnie and Clyde, the real-life pair who inspired the story.
Money remains a central factor in the story. The choices recall those of Red Dead Redemption 2, where Arthur Morgan must decide whether to spend on himself or help the camp.
Main missions are gated by time and money
Players who rush through the campaign will hit barriers. In GTA 5, the next mission became available right after the previous one. In GTA 6, players will have to wait a set amount of time or gather money before the next mission unlocks.

Robbing stores and stealing cars are ways to raise that money. According to Nelson, the game still accommodates players in a hurry, but these small blocks will exist.
How NPCs respond to what they see and how players act
Each character has their own temperament and level of aggression. Depending on the place, what they have witnessed and how the player behaves nearby, they may attack or quietly walk away.
In one demonstration, Jason watched a person walking a dog for too long. The person let go of the animal, which chased the protagonist.
Buses and trains now have decorated routes
Phil Hooker, Rockstar‘s head of development, said the team worked to make buses and trains appear with decorated routes. In previous games, players could steal vehicles but could not get into them as passengers.
