Capcom intends to bring the storylines of its Resident Evil remakes together with the numbered main games once the two production tracks meet. Executive producer Jun Takeuchi made the statement in Osaka, Japan, and said the company is already building that convergence.

Takeuchi detailed the strategy in the Japanese commemorative publication Biohazard 30th Special Mook, released on 30 September 2026. He explained that Capcom works on two complementary fronts. The numbered games carry the modern chronology forward, while the modernized remakes revisit the first steps of the biological outbreak.

Capcom began laying the groundwork with Resident Evil 7 and Village

The plan to join the two narratives started to take shape during the development of recent titles. According to Takeuchi, the gradual inclusion of classic elements in new settings worked as a test to measure how the community reacted to the mysteries of the global story.

Takeuchi said the team noticed player engagement right away, after the first clues appeared in the modern chronology. He cited Resident Evil 7 as a turning point and said the elements were first added to please fans. “Players became far more excited than we imagined,” he said, adding that some began analyzing ideas the team had kept secret.

The strategy gained more weight in later projects. Takeuchi said the remake series will one day catch up with the era of the numbered games, and that the company is already considering what it will do then. He added that Capcom has been preparing for that moment gradually since Resident Evil Village.

Key dates behind the franchise’s two-track plan

The company’s long-term plan involves anniversary milestones, support releases and new release forecasts. The main dates and figures are below.

  • 30 years: the anniversary celebrated in the Biohazard 30th Special Mook.
  • 7 years: the current cycle of remakes built on the RE Engine, opened with Resident Evil 2 in 2019.
  • 27 February 2026: release of Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth numbered main game.
  • 2027: release year announced for Resident Evil Veronica, a remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica, with no specific date set.

Seven years of RE Engine remakes, from Resident Evil 2 to 4

The modern remake phase began seven years ago, when Capcom released the reworked Resident Evil 2 in 2019. The project used the proprietary RE Engine to rebuild stages, gameplay and character models in a realistic style. Its critical and commercial success paved the way for Resident Evil 3 in 2020 and Resident Evil 4 in 2023.

With three of the most important games of the early era rebuilt, fewer classic titles remain without modern versions in the main line. That closeness in the catalog pushed the studio to decide how to handle the crossover. The remake chronology is moving quickly toward events that follow the transition begun in the previous decade.

Requiem brings Raccoon City and Umbrella back into the story

The link between past and present deepened with Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth numbered game, released on 27 February 2026. The adventure follows new protagonist Grace Ashcroft alongside veteran agent Leon S. Kennedy, and returns the story to the ruins and surroundings of Raccoon City.

The game also brought back core early elements, including direct references to the pharmaceutical company Umbrella and its founder, Ozwell E. Spencer. Takeuchi said these were not isolated tributes but narrative tools planned to make the future meeting of the two tracks possible.

Capcom has not yet said how the two tracks will merge

Capcom has not disclosed the practical format of the merger. It has not said whether the result will be one large game with several historic protagonists sharing the same mission, or a continuous restructuring of upcoming releases. The company has also not announced release schedules for possible remakes of other classic games, such as Resident Evil Zero, Resident Evil 1, Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6.

In a later interview with Japanese media, Takeuchi said the first ten years of the franchise’s branding reached the end of a chapter with Requiem. He said the next ten years will bring the main storyline to a conclusion, and that multiple new games are planned, without giving a number. Capcom has reaffirmed that Resident Evil Veronica remains in its 2027 release window, and the game is scheduled for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
