BYD has officially announced the Song Plus as the fourth vehicle slated for local production at its industrial complex in Camaçari, Bahia. This strategic move signals a significant expansion of the automaker’s manufacturing footprint in Brazil, aiming to cater to the burgeoning demand for hybrid and electric vehicles in the region. The Song Plus, renowned as the brand’s top-selling plug-in hybrid (PHEV) globally, is set to begin assembly operations at the facility in 2026, further solidifying BYD’s market presence.

The decision to localize production of the Song Plus underscores BYD’s commitment to the Brazilian market, even as the model transitions out of the brand’s direct offerings in China. The company clarified that its market strategies differ significantly between its home country and international territories due to distinct market specificities. Brazil, in particular, continues to be a crucial growth area for electrified mobility, making local assembly a key component of BYD’s long-term strategy.

The version of the Song Plus designated for production in Camaçari will be identical to the model currently available to Brazilian consumers. Internal sources within the company have confirmed that the vehicle will not be discontinued in Brazil, reinforcing its position as a core product in the local lineup. The exact date for the commencement of assembly remains undisclosed, but the timeline firmly places the launch within the 2026 calendar year.

Strategic expansion in Brazil

The Camaçari complex is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of BYD’s global manufacturing strategy, particularly for its international markets. The facility, which recently celebrated the production of 20,000 units, is already assembling three other key models: the BYD Song Pro, Dolphin Mini, and King. The integration of the Song Plus will diversify the local production portfolio, emphasizing the brand’s focus on hybrid technology.

This expansion is part of a broader trend of increased investment by international automakers in Brazil’s domestic production capabilities. BYD’s commitment to local assembly is expected to enhance vehicle availability, potentially reduce delivery times, and strengthen the supply chain for electrified models across the country. The move also signals a maturing market for new energy vehicles in South America.

Song Plus: A market leader

The BYD Song Plus has distinguished itself as a frontrunner in the plug-in hybrid segment, particularly in markets outside China. Its blend of efficiency, performance, and modern design has resonated well with consumers seeking sustainable yet capable vehicles. This market leadership position makes it a strategic choice for localized production, leveraging its proven appeal and strong sales record.

The model’s continued availability and local assembly in Brazil ensure that consumers will have access to a well-established and highly-regarded PHEV. It positions the Song Plus to benefit from potential incentives and consumer shifts towards greener transportation options within the Brazilian automotive landscape. The robust demand for the Song Plus reinforces its role as a flagship hybrid for BYD.

Global versus local market dynamics

BYD’s approach to market differentiation highlights the complex nature of the automotive industry’s global strategies. While the Song Plus might no longer be a primary offering in its domestic Chinese market, its strong performance and strategic importance in international markets dictate different production and sales plans. This adaptive strategy allows BYD to optimize its product lifecycle based on regional consumer preferences and regulatory environments.

The distinction in market focus allows BYD to cater to the specific demands of diverse regions, ensuring that popular models like the Song Plus continue to thrive where they are most valued. This global perspective helps in maintaining competitive advantages and fostering sustainable growth in different territories worldwide. Such flexibility is crucial in today’s rapidly evolving automotive landscape.

Camaçari’s growing footprint

The Camaçari plant represents a substantial investment by BYD, transforming a former industrial site into a modern hub for new energy vehicle production. The facility’s increasing output and diversified model lineup underscore its growing importance not only for Brazil but also for BYD’s regional supply chain. It is set to become a vital export base for other Latin American countries.

The expansion is anticipated to create numerous direct and indirect job opportunities, contributing significantly to the local economy of Bahia. This industrial development is aligned with governmental initiatives to boost high-tech manufacturing and sustainable mobility solutions across Brazil. The complex’s rapid ramp-up in production capacity has surprised many industry analysts.

The continued addition of models to the assembly line reflects BYD’s aggressive market penetration strategy, aiming to challenge established automakers in the competitive Brazilian market. As the facility scales up, it is expected to implement advanced manufacturing techniques and sustainable practices, aligning with BYD’s global commitment to environmental stewardship. The integrated production approach from battery manufacturing to final assembly sets this plant apart.

Key features of the updated Song Plus

In mid-2025, the BYD Song Plus received significant aesthetic updates, aligning its design with the more premium Song Premium model for the 2026 line. The plug-in hybrid SUV now features a more streamlined front grille with horizontal elements, presenting a cleaner and more sophisticated look. This redesign enhances the vehicle’s visual appeal and positions it more competitively against other SUVs in its class.

The rear of the vehicle also saw notable revisions, including a redesigned taillight cluster and a new bumper, contributing to a refreshed and modern aesthetic. Furthermore, the introduction of a new “Smoke Grey” color option and wheels mirroring the Premium model ensures visual consistency across the Song family. These changes aim to maintain the model’s contemporary appeal.

Performance and design enhancements

Beyond the aesthetic enhancements, the Song Plus 2026 model also boasts improved performance metrics. The SUV now delivers 235 horsepower and 40.8 kgfm of torque, offering a more dynamic driving experience. Its acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h has been reduced from 8.5 seconds to a swifter 7.9 seconds, a notable improvement attributed to better aerodynamic efficiency.

BYD is also making strides in market accessibility, evidenced by its recent initiative to offer electric vehicles with discounts for Persons with Disabilities (PCD) for the first time in Brazil. This move expands the brand’s reach and supports a broader segment of the population in transitioning to electrified transportation.
