Sebastian Vettel completes London marathon under three hours on debut

The former driver of Fórmula 1 Sebastian Vettel finished Maratona of Londres in 2h59min08s. The German, four-time world champion, made his debut at the 42 km distance this Sunday and was 52 seconds below the target he had set. The race took place in hot conditions in the British capital.

Vettel ran in support of two charities. Ele and presenter Tom Clarkson raised funds for Grand Prix Trust and Brain & Spine Foundation. The sporting result was accompanied by a good volume of donations.

Vettel maintains a constant pace during the 42 km

The German passed the 21 km mark in 1h29min18s. Ele held the pace in the second half of the race and crossed the finish line with an official time of 2h59min08s. The average was around 4min15s per kilometer.

Kenyan Sabastian Sawe won the men’s marathon with a record time of 1h59min30s. Foi is the first time an athlete has officially completed the distance under two hours in a race. Second place, Yomif Kejelcha, from Etiópia, clocked 1h59min41s.

Sawe’s mark surpassed the previous world record by 65 seconds. The event entered the history of athletics for this feat.

Ex-pilot highlights public support and positive experience

Vettel reported that he didn’t know exactly what to expect from his first marathon. The four-time F1 champion praised the atmosphere on the street and the encouragement from spectators. Ele had been planning to run a marathon for some time and chose Londres for his debut.

The German completed the race in position 3094 among more than 60 thousand participants. The result was impressive even for those who are not professional runners.

Além of the time, Vettel and Clarkson exceeded the fundraising goal. The pair were seeking around £5,000 for the two institutions. The total came to more than £8,000. The focus on causes linked to motorsport and brain health gave extra meaning to the race.
