An agent descends from a helicopter suspended by ropes into a river infested with crocodiles. The scene, captured in a video circulating on social media, shows the extremely risky moment in which the South African police officer takes part in an operation to recover human remains. Tudo began when a businessman disappeared after his vehicle became stuck on a flooded bridge northeast of África from Sul. The police hypothesis was that he had been swept away by the current. What no one expected was the discovery that would come later.

The operation took place on the banks of the Komati river, close to Parque Nacional Kruger. The businessman’s car was found empty the previous week, during an attempt to cross a low bridge that had overflowed. Investigadores initially suspected that the man had gotten out of the car and been swept away by the turbulent waters of the river. Diante of this possibility, the police activated divers, helicopters and drones for a massive search in the region.

Localização of the suspected animal

Durante aerial scans, agents identified a small island in the Komati river where several crocodiles were resting. One of them caught immediate attention: the reptile had an extremely full belly and was not moving despite the noise from the drones and the aircraft. Captain Johant “Pottie” Potgieter, commander of a police diving unit, analyzed the abnormal behavior. Sua’s experience led the team to suspect that that specific animal might have recently fed on the missing victim.

The police decided to kill the crocodile before starting the rescue operation, internally classified as “highly dangerous and complex”. Sem the animal alive, the team could work safely to recover any evidence inside the reptile’s body.

Descida risky and discoveries

Images of the aerial operation show the police officer being slowly lowered by ropes from the helicopter into the murky water of the river. The procedure lasted tense minutes as the agent approached the immobilized crocodile. Potgieter explained to the local press the seriousness of the job: “The sharp end of a crocodile is not the best place to get close to it.” The reptile measured approximately 4.5 meters in length and weighed around 500 kilograms.

Após was removed from the river by air, the animal was immediately taken to Parque Nacional Kruger. Especialistas opened the crocodile and found human remains inside. The discovery confirmed investigators’ suspicions about the businessman’s disappearance. Exames DNA tests are being conducted to definitively identify the remains and confirm that they truly belong to the wanted victim.

An additional disturbing detail emerged during the animal’s internal examination:

  • Seis different types of shoes were found inside the crocodile
  • Discovery suggests multiple previous attacks on others
  • Investigadores warn that the shoes do not constitute definitive proof of other victims
  • The predatory behavior of the animal in question will be analyzed in a historical context
  • Registros of attacks in the region will be reviewed

Potgieter highlighted that “a crocodile eats or swallows anything”, indicating that the presence of the shoes does not necessarily represent confirmation of multiple fatalities.

Elogio to rescue operation

Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, acting head of the South African police, publicly recognized the bravery of the agents involved in the mission. Ela highlighted the extreme complexity of executing an operation in a high-risk area, surrounded by the region’s predators and under challenging weather conditions. The Komati river is known for the strong presence of crocodiles and unpredictable currents, making any work on the banks dangerous even under normal circumstances.

The operation represented a coordinated effort between multiple South African police units. Elite Mergulhadores, experienced helicopter pilots and expert investigators worked together to complete a task that many considered unlikely to be accomplished successfully. Specific training for operations in environments with wildlife was essential so that the police officer could descend to the water in relative safety, even though the risks remained high throughout the procedure.

Contexto regional and security

Parque Nacional Kruger is one of the largest wildlife reserves in África and serves as a natural habitat for Nilo crocodiles, a species that can reach considerable sizes. The Komati River marks part of the edge of this park and is often the scene of dangerous encounters between humans and wildlife. The week before the businessman’s disappearance had seen intense rain in the region, significantly raising the water level and the speed of the current.

Moradores Locals know the risks of trying to cross low bridges during rainy periods, but emergencies sometimes force people to make hasty decisions. The missing businessman probably attempted a crossing that seemed possible at the time, without anticipating the strength of the waters or the presence of predators. Sua’s death, now confirmed by the remains found, adds to a history of accidents in the region.

South African authorities are studying additional safety measures for the area, including clearer signage about risks during rainy periods and regular patrols to monitor the crocodile population that inhabits the river.
