World Whiskies Awards organizers announced the big winners of the 2026 edition during an official ceremony held in the city of Londres. The annual event evaluated more than nine thousand labels submitted by producers from 52 different regions around the globe. The awards recognized the Bowmore 21 Years Old Sherry Oak Cask, produced at Escócia, with the main title of Melhor Single Malt from Mundo. The result consolidates the tradition of British distilleries in the high-end drinks sector and reaffirms the region’s strength in the international market.
This year’s competition demonstrated strong diversity in the global spirits market, with a notable expansion of new production frontiers. Historic Produtores shared the spotlight with emerging country brands like Espanha, Japão and Austrália. Ballantine’s 23 Years Old secured the Melhor Blended Whisky trophy from Mundo after rigorous technical evaluation. Já o Siderit PX Cask Rye, manufactured in Spanish territory, surprised the evaluators and won the category of Melhor Rye Whisky from Mundo, displacing traditional competitors from América from Norte.
Scottish dominance and the rise of new producing regions
The evaluation took place through blind tests conducted by experts, master distillers and critics from the beverage sector. The judges analyzed rigorous technical criteria, such as quality of the base distillate, character of the drink, aromatic complexity and fidelity to the proposed style. The director responsible for organizing the event stated during the ceremony that the award-winning labels represent the maximum level of innovation and tradition available in the current market. The presence of distilleries from different continents in the final stages reflects the internationalization of consumption and production of the drink.
The competitive scenario of 2026 showed that the classic regions maintain their commercial and technical strength intact. Escócia topped the most prestigious categories, reaffirming the historical weight of its centuries-old facilities and mastery over aging techniques. However, the performance of units located outside the traditional axis caught the attention of experts present at Londres. European and Asian Países presented products capable of rivaling centuries-old brands, delivering aromatic complexity and flavor structure at levels equivalent to the great champions.
Perfil sensory and maturation of Bowmore 21 Years Old
The highlight of the night belongs to the Sherry Oak collection from the distillery located on the island of Islay, famous for its peated profiles. Bowmore 21 Years Old Sherry Oak Cask goes through a complex and fractional aging process before final bottling. The drink initially rests in American oak barrels that previously stored traditional bourbon. Next, the liquid is transferred to Oloroso European sherry barrels. The final stage of maturation takes place in first-use Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, known for their intense sweetness.
Essa barrel engineering creates a very specific and balanced aromatic profile. The alcohol content of the product reaches 46% ABV, sold in 750ml bottles. The aroma delivers clear notes of vanilla and beeswax. The evaluators also identified maritime nuances, sea breeze, iodine and a light peat smoke characteristic of the coastal region. The palate balances the smoke with sweet raisins. Frutas dry and rich sherry spices complete the sensorial experience in the mouth.
Pedro Ximénez’s barrel finish adds deep layers of fig, date syrup and chocolate to the base spirit. The texture of the liquid has a full-bodied density, described by the judges as waxy and almost oily, carrying the richness of peat. The end of the tasting remains on the palate for a long period. The smoke lingers along with hints of sea salt, syrup and spices that blend in a continuous, controlled progression.
Características’s Ballantine’s 23 Years Old and Siderit’s PX Cask Rye
The market focused on airport stores and international travel gained a strong representative with the victory of Ballantine’s 23 Years Old. The brand developed this expanded version of its classic blend using Glenburgie single malt as the central base of the mixture. Todos the components of the recipe are aged exclusively in first-use American oak barrels, which enhances the extraction of flavors from the wood. The alcohol content is set at 40% ABV in the standard 750ml version.
The aroma of the Scottish blend highlights sweet orchard fruits, poached pear and vanilla cream at first contact. The palate confirms the presence of ripe apple and buttery caramel, supported by notes of cooked malt cereal and licorice. The satin-soft texture and medium body ensure smooth integration of the alcohol, without aggression. The sweet finish maintains the persistence of ripe fruits, subtle spices and oak aged for more than two decades.
In the rye category, Destilaria Siderit has put the Cantábria region on the global premium spirits map. The Siderit PX Cask Rye 2026 uses 100% rye malt distilled in the Spanish unit itself. Aging lasts approximately 86 months in Spanish white oak barrels. Estes containers are first flavored with Bodegas Lustau sherry, adding complexity to the grain. The final product reaches the market with 46.8% ABV in 700ml bottles. The velvety flavor blends dried apricots, baked apples, honey, toasted wood and spicy rye spices.
Global Diversidade and Spirits Market Trends in 2026
This year’s edition of World Whiskies Awards awarded labels from different origins in specific categories, showing the decentralization of excellence. Ichiro’s Malt & Grain Blended Japanese Whisky 2026 won the coveted title of Melhor Blended Limited Release. The Canadian market had a strong presence with the JP Wiser’s 27 Years Old Mizunara Oak, recognized in the regional blended category. The Ohtani Whisky Niigata Kameda New Pot Peated 2026 Edition was among the main highlights of new styles evaluated by the judges.
The award results point to clear trends in the production methods adopted by the world’s main distilleries:
- The intensive use of Pedro Ximénez sherry casks for finishing peated malts.
- The valorization of American oak for its first use in the construction of high-age blends.
- The exponential growth of rye production in countries outside América of Norte.
- Constant experimentation with barrels of varied origins, such as Spanish white oak.
- Technical recognition of emerging distilleries located in Ásia and Oceania.
The strategic use of wood proved to be the decisive factor in choosing the season’s great champions. In the case of Scottish single malt, the barrel complemented the region’s natural peat without canceling out the original flavor of the base grain. In the Spanish version, the container imparted a rich sweetness necessary to balance the natural, dry strength of the rye. The competition ends its 2026 cycle by consolidating new quality standards and expanding the range of options for consumers in the global beverage market.
