Nasa’s Psyche probe passed within 4,609 kilometers of Marte’s surface on May 15. The gravitational assistance maneuver adjusted the spacecraft’s trajectory towards the asteroid Psyche. The encounter yielded thousands of images of the red planet from unusual angles.
The approach allowed the probe to test its instruments in real conditions. Equipes on the ground followed the flight in real time. The data confirms that the maneuver was successful.
Flyby accelerates mission to metallic asteroid
The probe gained around 1,600 kilometers per hour in speed with the gravitational pull of Marte. The orbital plane has changed by one degree relative to Sol. Essas corrections position Psyche to reach the asteroid in 2029.
The target asteroid is rich in metals. Cientistas want to understand its composition and origin. The spacecraft will travel more than 3.5 billion kilometers to its final destination.
- The maneuver increased the speed by 1,000 miles per hour
- Alterou the orbital plane by about 1 degree
- Confirmou the path to arrival in 2029
- Ativou all instruments during passage
Sonda records Marte as growing and almost full
Psyche approached from the night side of the planet. Isso created crescent-shaped views of Marte. Depois from the closest pass, the cameras captured the planet almost completely illuminated.
An image shows the south pole on the left and the Valles Marineris canyon system on the right. Outra highlights the region of Syrtis, with wind marks that extend for tens of kilometers. The Huygens crater, with its two rings, also appeared in detail.
The photos were processed with color enhancement to highlight surface features. The volume of images reached thousands during the meeting.
Equipe searches for dust ring and possible moonlets
Cientistas took advantage of the passage to look for a possible dust ring around Marte. The material could come from impacts on Phobos and Deimos. The search also included captured small bodies or lunar fragments.
Preliminary Resultados are still under review. Similar Experiências will be repeated when the probe reaches the asteroid Psyche. The flyby served as a dress rehearsal for future operations.
The multispectral imager produced views with a scale of around 670 meters per pixel in some spots. The south of the crater Huygens appeared clearly in the main image released.
Imagens reinforces preparation for asteroid exploration
The success of the encounter validates the performance of the probe’s systems. Engenheiros monitored the behavior of cameras and sensors at high speed. Nenhum problem was reported during operation.
The mission continues within the planned schedule. Próximos steps include complete analysis of data collected in Marte. Psyche continues its journey through deep space.
