Celtic Football Club has officially announced the reappointment of Martin O’Neill as manager, signing an initial one-year contract that includes the possibility of extension for another season. The decision aims to continue the successful work that the coach has already demonstrated during his time at the club.
In his previous career at the helm of the Scottish team, Martin O’Neill accumulated a total of nine significant trophies, highlighted by the fifth consecutive league title and the recent double, which encompassed both the Scottish Championship and the Scottish Cup last season.
Among his most notable achievements, O’Neill stood out for being the first manager to secure the national Triple Crown for Celtic in a period of 32 years, accomplishing the feat in his first year in charge, in 2001. Furthermore, he led the team to the final of a European competition, which took place in Seville in 2003, showing the ability to compete at a high level.
The most recent season under his leadership culminated in the club’s 56th Premiership title. O’Neill guided the team to a run of seven consecutive league wins, marking one of the most impressive chapters in Scottish football, culminating in the team’s fourth Scottish Cup victory and 43rd in Celtic’s history.
Celtic interim chairman Brian Wilson expressed his delight at Martin O’Neill’s continued work. “We welcome Martin’s reappointment with great enthusiasm and we hope that he will continue to demonstrate the same leadership, inspiration and success that he has already delivered to the club,” he said.
Wilson highlighted that “the results achieved by him and the entire team in the previous season established a solid foundation for the challenges that will soon present themselves.”
With optimism, the interim president concluded: “This off-season period will be intense, and our goal is to ensure the best possible condition to compete, now with Martin O’Neill once again at the helm.”
Martin O’Neill expressed great pleasure at signing a new deal with Celtic. “It is an immense honor for me to be able to continue as Celtic’s manager. Last season will remain in the memories of all of us, and being part of that triumph has only intensified my desire to work so that we can relive more moments like this and provide them to our dedicated fans”, said the coach.
The coach made a point of praising the joint work: “Certainly, none of this would be possible without the dedication of the players and the coaching staff, and I wish to use this chance to express my gratitude to them for displaying such concentration, determination and talent in the final stretch of the championship, guaranteeing the double, with the league and cup titles.”
O’Neill also thanked the board. “I would like to extend a special thank you to the Council for calling me back and granting me this opportunity once again,” he stated.
Reflecting on future ambitions, the manager said: “We are fully aware that Celtic can never be satisfied with past victories. Therefore, our goal is to move forward together next season, with the aim of winning more trophies for the club and our passionate fans.”
Finally, O’Neill addressed the fans: “I thank our fans for their unwavering support, which means everything to us. I look forward to returning to Celtic Park next season when we will meet again and strive to give our fans the success that their unwavering support deserves.”
Michael Nicholson, Celtic chief executive, expressed the board’s delight: “We are delighted to retain Martin as our manager. His vast knowledge and experience were crucial to us in the last campaign, and we are certain that his leadership will be of utmost importance to our future.”
He added, stating that “he is a professional who consistently delivers results, who masters the art of victory and is a coach in whom we have complete trust to, once again, guide the squad in the next cycle.”
The executive director emphasized the upcoming challenges: “We will have important obstacles ahead, and the immediate priority of everyone at the club is to ensure we are prepared to face them safely and to bring success to our fans again.”
Dermot Desmond, Celtic’s main shareholder, also commented on the decision. “Martin has repeatedly demonstrated his abilities and the valuable contribution he can make to Celtic,” noted Desmond.
He reiterated his confidence in the coach, saying: “We know he is a winner, we understand what the club means to him, and he remains the perfect choice to give us the best chance of achieving our goals.”
Desmond concluded, highlighting the coach’s understanding: “He knows Celtic’s demands, and I’m sure how committed he is to bringing new triumphs for the club and for our fans.”
The main shareholder guaranteed unrestricted support: “The club will provide all necessary support to Martin during the off-season to ensure that we are properly prepared to achieve success on the national stage and to compete at European level.”
