The Mexican team takes the field this Thursday (11) for the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The duel against South Africa, at the Estadio Azteca, in Mexico City, marks the start of the tournament with 48 teams and places the home team as the big favorite in Group A.

Coach Javier Aguirre defined the starting lineup with Raúl Rangel in goal. The defense features Israel Reyes, César Montes (captain), Johan Vásquez and Jesús Gallardo. In the middle, Erik Lira acts as midfielder, with Brian Gutiérrez and Álvaro Fidalgo. In attack, Roberto Alvarado, Raúl Jiménez and Julián Quiñones complete the 4-1-4-1 formation.

South Africa, led by Hugo Broos, should take to the field with a 5-3-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams (captain) has protection from Khuliso Mudau, Ime Okon, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Aubrey Modiba. Teboho Mokoena, Sphephelo Sithole and Thalente Mbatha form the middle, with Lyle Foster as the main reference in attack.

The referee will be Brazilian Wilton Pereira Sampaio, who becomes the first in the country to officiate a World Cup opening match. Assistants Bruno Pires and Bruno Boschilia are also Brazilian, forming a national trio.

Mexico seeks strong start at home

Playing with the support of the Azteca fans, Mexico wants to start with a victory to take the lead in Group A. The altitude of more than 2,200 meters in Mexico City is a factor that favors the local team and could complicate the South Africans’ fitness. Aguirre’s team arrives with the experience of veterans like Raúl Jiménez and the defensive solidity seen in recent preparations.

Live broadcast in Brazil

In Brazil, the match will be broadcast on open TV on SBT. SporTV, Globoplay, ge, CazéTV (YouTube) and NSports also show the game live, ensuring options for fans to follow the premiere.

What to expect from the clash

Mexico appears as the clear favorite at bookmakers, with low odds for victory. South Africa, classified via the African Qualifiers, seeks to surprise and score points in its debut. The game gains even more importance as it is the opening of the expanded World Cup, with global broadcast and high expectations for the host’s performance.
