The Instagram application accidentally made available, in Brazil, a feature called “Instagram Map”, which allowed users to share their location with their respective followers. The tool, which appeared this Wednesday (10), quickly generated an intense debate on social media, with many criticisms focused on the potential violation of privacy.

In an official statement sent to g1, the company Meta, responsible for Instagram, clarified that the release of the functionality in Brazilian territory occurred by mistake. The company stated that it was in the process of correcting the incident to disable the feature.

Before being deactivated, the tool’s interface displayed a message indicating that the location would not be shared unless the user activated the option. Instagram also communicated that “your followers can see your content in the locations you tag”, suggesting optional control over the data.

Within the direct messaging (DM) section of the app, users would find a globe icon labeled “Map.” When interacting with it, a screen opened, allowing the viewing of locations associated with publications and stories shared by other profiles.

This functionality had already been controversial in 2025, when some users had prior access to the feature and expressed significant concerns about how location information would be shared. The history of accusations against major social media platforms, including Meta, for failures to protect sensitive data adds a layer of urgency to these debates, highlighting the importance of strict control over personal data.

At that time, the company had stated that the development of the feature prioritized security, incorporating mechanisms so that users could determine who would have access to their location, hide specific points, such as their workplace, and receive reminders to only share this data with trusted contacts.

Immediate repercussions and criticism of data exposure

The negative reaction to Instagram’s new functionality took over social networks, where several users expressed their criticisms and warned of serious potential risks to privacy and personal security.

One internet user, for example, used platform X to express his indignation, stating that “Instagram is giving stalkers a weapon”, highlighting the concern about the misuse of information.

Another post revealed surprise and fear: “I’m viewing the locations of countless people on Instagram, including individuals I’ve never interacted with”, which highlights the breadth and unexpected exposure of the data.

A third user, in a tone of disbelief, wrote: “It’s 2026 and Instagram considered it acceptable to launch a MAP that allows you to see where people are!”. The phrase highlights the astonishment at the platform’s apparent lack of sensitivity.

Furthermore, one comment emphasized the seriousness of the situation, especially for women: “Do not activate location on the Instagram map, especially if you are women. This is one of the biggest craziness I have ever seen”, a direct warning about the real dangers and security implications for the most vulnerable groups in society.
