Tennis player Taylor Fritz secured his ticket to the semifinals of the ATP 500 in Halle by overcoming Ben Shelton, breaking a sequence of three setbacks for his compatriot. This victory is significant, as the German tournament has never had a North American champion in its history, and Fritz’s performance rekindles hope of an unprecedented title for the United States.

The extended confrontation between the two tennis players lasted two hours and 49 minutes, marked by three decisive tiebreaks. Ben Shelton got the better of the first tiebreaker, with a score of 7-5, but Fritz reversed the situation, winning the following tiebreaks by 10-8 and 7-3. Shelton even had a match point on Fritz’s serve in the second set, when he led the tiebreak 7-6, after having a 4-2 advantage.

Expressing his delight, Fritz declared himself “relieved” after the match ended. He acknowledged that his opponent had created the best chances, but expressed satisfaction at having taken advantage of the opportunities that arose. The athlete also highlighted the difficulty of facing Shelton, mentioning the high risk involved in his opponent’s serves and the need to adopt a more aggressive stance in returns and when going up to the net.

Before this triumph, Fritz’s only victory over Shelton had come in Indian Wells, during the year 2023. Since then, the player has faced defeats to the same opponent in the Canadian semifinals the previous year, in addition to two tournament finals this season, one in Dallas and the most recent, last Sunday, in Stuttgart, on the grass surface.

Fritz’s current performance in the tournament ensures his return to seventh place in the world rankings, surpassing Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, regardless of the final result of the competition. The placement will be made official next Monday, highlighting the direct impact of his performance on the tennis hierarchy. His next clash will be against the winner of the match between favorite Alexander Zverev and Belgian tennis player Raphael Collignon.

During this Friday’s match, service performance stood out as Fritz’s strong point. He achieved a 78% success rate on his first serve, converting 80% of those points. The tennis player avoided the only break chance faced throughout the game, which occurred in the second game of the second set. In addition, he recorded 24 aces, surpassing Shelton’s 15, in a duel that counted just six points with more than nine ball changes.
