The Prime Minister of Japan’s official transport fleet underwent a significant upgrade on June 22, with the replacement of a traditional sedan for a modern sport utility vehicle (SUV). This change represents an adaptation in the mobility priorities of senior government officials.

Previously, the Japanese head of government used a Toyota Century sedan, a model known for its luxury and discretion, for his trips. The car now gives way to an SUV, signaling a new approach to official travel, possibly with a focus on greater robustness.

The debut of the new car took place on the same day as the replacement, when Prime Minister Takaichi used it to travel from her official residence to the Japanese parliament, the Diet. There, she participated in important meetings of the budget committee in both legislative houses, the Chamber of Representatives and the Chamber of Councilors.

At a press conference, Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara addressed the matter, stating that the exchange decision considered the general condition of the previous vehicle. He also highlighted that, for security reasons, details about acquisition costs would not be disclosed, as such information could expose the performance and specific characteristics of the adopted model.

The official Toyota Motor Corporation website describes this new model as a true “mobile office”, designed to offer greater comfort and safety to rear seat occupants. This investment in mobility and protection has a value suggested by the manufacturer of 27 million yen, the equivalent of approximately 900 thousand reais at the current price, highlighting the high cost involved in the security of a head of state.
