Millions of Instagram and Facebook users faced a wave of instability this Tuesday (23), with interruptions that affected several of the platforms’ functionalities. Reports of difficulties in access and use quickly spread across multiple countries, generating global frustration among the internet user base of Meta’s social networks.

Spikes in complaints highlight problems across the country and beyond+

The Downdetector service, specialized in monitoring interruptions on digital platforms, registered a large volume of complaints in Brazil. For Instagram, more than 3,600 notifications of problems were reported, while Facebook, also from Meta, had around 1,800 reports of difficulties in the national territory.

The extent of the problems was not limited to the Brazilian public. Users from several other nations also turned to the X platform (formerly Twitter) to report similar failures. The complaints indicated a series of inconveniences when trying to access or use social media services.

The difficulties faced by users on Meta platforms

The outages caused a variety of disruptions, directly impacting the experience of millions of people. Many users were prevented from performing basic tasks, while others experienced slowdowns and crashes.

Top issues reported by users

  • Inability to access the news feed or scroll the screen to view content.
  • Difficulty publishing photos, videos or stories on your profiles.
  • Failures in sending and receiving direct messages, compromising communication.
  • Excessive slowness in loading pages and profiles of friends and brands.
  • Problems logging into accounts, completely preventing access.

The absence of an official position from Meta on instabilities

The company Meta, responsible for both Instagram and Facebook, was asked about the reasons for the recent interruptions to its services. We sought to find out if other platforms in the group were impacted and what the forecast would be for normalization. However, the company had not released any official statement until the last update of this report.

Understand why interruptions are recurrent on large digital platforms

Outages on giant digital platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook, are not isolated events and have complex causes inherent to their scale. The infrastructure that supports billions of users globally is vast and intricate, involving thousands of interconnected servers and data centers. Even small failures in critical components can trigger a large-scale ripple effect, resulting in widespread outages.

The complexity of the system and the need for constant updates and maintenance increase the likelihood of technical incidents. Factors such as software errors, network problems, server overload or even cyberattacks can destabilize operations. The rapid dissemination of new features can also introduce vulnerabilities, even with the most rigorous quality testing.

The global and historical impact of major social media outages

The track record of big technology companies shows that large-scale outages are nothing new. In October 2021, for example, Meta (then known as Facebook) suffered one of the biggest outages in its history, affecting Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp for hours. The incident caused losses estimated at millions of dollars.

Such events highlight the world’s deep dependence on these platforms for personal communication, social interaction and, increasingly, for essential business and services. With each failure, the vulnerability of a highly connected society becomes evident, underlining the significant impact of each disruption on the daily flow of information and economic activity.
