The Brazilian team secured its place in the knockout stages of the World Cup after taking first place in Group C, beating Scotland 3-0. Now, Brazil has Japan as its confirmed opponent in the opening of the knockout stages, as the Asian team secured second place in group F.

The long-awaited clash between Brazil and Japan will take place next Monday, the 29th, being the first in a sequence of three clashes scheduled for the date.

The match will start at 2pm, Brasília time, at NRG Stadium, located in Houston, in the United States. Fans will be able to follow the game on CazéTV, with broadcast accessible at no additional cost through the Disney+ platform.

This will be the sixth football event held at the stadium, known for regularly hosting clashes between the Houston Texans team in the American football league, the NFL.

A statistical analysis carried out by Opta’s “supercomputer” indicates that Brazil has great favoritism to advance to the round of 16, with a 69.1% probability of classification, in contrast to the 30.9% attributed to the Japanese. However, this projection differs from the opinion of Joachim Klement, the German economist known for predicting world champions, who is betting on Japan’s victory, highlighting the balance and evolution of the Asian team.

The teams of Brazil and Japan have already met in previous editions of the World Cup. The only time the teams faced each other in a World Cup occurred in 2006, during the tournament hosted in Germany.

At that time, both teams were part of the same group and played the last game of the group stage. The Brazilian team, in one of its most outstanding performances in that competition, scored a 4-1 victory, with goals scored by Ronaldo, who scored two, Juninho Pernambucano and Gilberto.

Thanks to this significant victory, the Brazilian team secured its qualification for the knockout stages with a total of 9 points, while Japan ended its participation in the tournament with just 1 point achieved.

The company Opta also released its projections for two other games already confirmed in the 16th round of the competition:

  • South Africa has a 32% chance of winning against Canada’s 68%.
  • The Netherlands appears with a 60.6% probability of winning, while Morocco has a 39.4% probability.
