Valve is already planning future versions of the Steam Machine, even before the official launch of its new generation of the compact computer. Company engineers, such as Pierre-Loup Griffais, reveal that the device is not expected to achieve the same durability in terms of specifications as the Steam Deck portable.
Products have different purposes, which justifies different design approaches. The Steam Deck is designed as a more closed platform, where maintaining fixed specifications for a longer period makes more strategic sense, avoiding annual changes.

In contrast, the Steam Machine is seen by Valve as a conventional pre-assembled PC. Griffais highlighted that, for a product of this nature, it is not so crucial to establish a fixed performance objective over an extended period of five years.
Plans for the next generation of the Steam Machine are not yet immediate
Despite expectations for more frequent updates to the Steam Machine, Griffais clarified that developing a successor is not Valve’s top priority at the moment. The company first seeks to observe public and market reception, as well as the trends of the next wave of consoles.
A challenging factor for the hardware industry is the rising cost of essential components such as RAM and SSDs. Valve itself admitted that the first generation of the Steam Machine will have a higher price than desired due to this issue, a problem that affects several companies in the sector. The flexibility to quickly update the Steam Machine could be a strategy to deal with the volatility of component prices, allowing the company to better adapt to production costs with each new iteration.
Recently, Microsoft confirmed an increase in the prices of Xbox Series X|S consoles starting in August, justifying the decision by rising storage costs. The company did not rule out further price revisions for 2027, if the component market situation does not stabilize.
Valve engineers consider these elements, including the purchasing habits and financial capacity of buyers in relation to the new values, when planning future versions of the compact PC.
