Google recently implemented changes to the Chrome Web Store guidelines to improve the security of add-ons available for the browser. One of the most relevant changes is the ban on tools developed to overcome restrictions imposed by artificial intelligence platforms, such as Gemini, ChatGPT and other similar services.

The rules updates also establish stricter limits on data collection by developers and increase the need for clarity about the information accessed by extensions. The company highlighted that these measures are part of an ongoing effort to minimize improper practices and ensure greater protection for Chrome users.

As of the new standards, extensions are prevented from collecting data that exceeds what is necessary for their primary functionalities. This guideline aims to prevent developers from requesting broad permissions under the allegation of use in future or not-yet-implemented features.

A major change is aimed at tools linked to artificial intelligence. Google now officially vetoes extensions whose purpose is to circumvent usage limits, release restricted resources, bypass security systems or violate policies established by AI platforms.

The regulation directly impacts add-ons that aim, for example, to eliminate restrictions on services such as Gemini and ChatGPT, as well as other AI-based assistants. Extensions capable of circumventing protection systems or granting unauthorized access to exclusive features of paid plans will also be blocked.

In addition to the recent bans, Google expresses the objective of increasing transparency in the Chrome Web Store. Add-on creators will need to detail more precisely what data is collected, why it is collected, and how this information will be used during the operation of the add-on.

A recent case highlights the importance of these actions: Microsoft had to remove more than a hundred fraudulent extensions from the Edge store. The measure came after the detection of a campaign dedicated to stealing user credentials and authentication codes, raising a severe warning about the dangers linked to add-ons that, at first glance, seem harmless.

With the implementation of the new policies, Google aims to hinder the spread of malicious extensions and reduce conduct considered abusive in the Chrome Web Store environment. The expectation is to strengthen a safer ecosystem for both users and developers that operate within the platform’s guidelines.
