Study reveals: short daytime naps change the brain and improve learning

Taking a short nap throughout the day is often associated with simply relieving fatigue. However, recent scientific research has revealed that this period of rest can have a much more profound impact, modifying essential brain processes. The discovery indicates that daytime sleep is capable of reestablishing part of the brain’s ability to form new neural connections, highlighting its importance not only for physical recovery, but also for the learning process, according to a study published on July 12, 2026 in the journal NeuroImage.

How the brain behaves after long hours of wakefulness

During our waking hours, the brain operates almost without interruption. Each interaction, new information, acquired skill or decision made strengthens certain connections between neurons. This mechanism, known as synaptic plasticity, is crucial for the formation of memory and the continuity of learning.

However, this ability does not expand indefinitely. Over time, brain activity intensifies, and connections accumulate a kind of functional excess. Several experts support the theory of synaptic homeostasis, which suggests that sleep is essential to readjust this intense activity, reducing the strength of less important connections and preserving those that are truly relevant to cognition.

Until recently, it was believed that this “readjustment” occurred mainly during nighttime sleep. Now, research published in 2026 in the journal NeuroImage demonstrates that a daytime nap can also trigger a similar effect, reorganizing brain activity.

For the study, 20 healthy young adults were divided into two groups. In one scenario, participants remained awake throughout the afternoon. In the other, they had the opportunity to sleep for approximately 45 minutes.

Before and after each session, the scientists monitored brain activity using electroencephalography and measured motor cortex excitability with transcranial magnetic stimulation. Furthermore, they assessed the brain’s ability to generate long-term potentiation, a mechanism directly linked to the creation of new neural connections and learning.

The results revealed a clear distinction. After several hours of wakefulness, participants showed increased brain excitability and a reduced ability to make new connections. After the nap, the opposite was observed: excessive brain activity decreased, and the brain once again demonstrated better conditions to learn efficiently.

The research does not define an ideal time, but highlights the benefits of rest

Although the study recorded an average of around 45 minutes of sleep, the researchers themselves emphasize that this number should not be interpreted as a universal recommendation.

The most appropriate duration for a nap varies depending on several factors, such as age, daily routine, quality of nighttime sleep and individual goals. Shorter naps, between 10 and 20 minutes, are generally enough to restore alertness without inducing so-called sleep inertia, which is that feeling of drowsiness and disorientation when waking up.

Slightly longer periods of sleep allow the brain to reach deeper phases, which are important for specific processes related to memory and learning. However, for some people, this can make it difficult to fully awaken.

Researchers reinforce that naps cannot replace a full night’s rest. Nighttime sleep remains essential for maintaining physical and mental health. However, the study points out that a period of rest during the day can act as a partial “reset” of the brain, reducing the saturation accumulated during wakefulness.

This finding helps to explain why many people are able to resume studies or professional tasks more easily after a short nap. By reducing brain excitability, the brain regains some of its ability to process new information effectively.

Despite the promising findings, the scientists remember that the research was conducted with a limited group of young adults and focused mainly on physiological changes. Larger studies will still be needed to confirm whether these effects extend to different age groups and to measure the direct impacts on school, professional and cognitive performance.

Still, the conclusion is significant: a nap is not just a rest break. Under specific conditions, it can help the brain restore its ability to learn, reinforcing the importance of sleep as one of the most effective tools for keeping the mind at high performance.
