Sony will discontinue physical game releases from 2028
Sony announced on Wednesday, July 10, that from January 2028 it will no longer sell physical games for PlayStation, a decision that reflects the public’s growing preference for digital media.
According to the official statement released on the PlayStation blog, all releases after this deadline will be accessible exclusively in digital format, both on the PlayStation Store and through download codes sold in commercial establishments.
In practice, players will need to download the titles directly through Sony’s digital platform or purchase codes at points of sale to access the content.
This announcement intensifies a debate already present in the gaming community, especially after discussions surrounding the launch of “Grand Theft Auto VI”, one of the most anticipated games and which promises to be one of the biggest sales successes of all time, available only in digital format.

On social media, many users expressed concern about the absence of physical media, which in their view would eliminate the possibility of reselling used games.
The company clarified, however, that this transition will not affect games already available or those released in disc format by the deadline set in January 2028.
Sony’s digital initiative is not entirely new, having been introduced in 2020 with the launch of the PlayStation 5, which already offered an exclusively digital version, without a disc player. This previous experience prepared the ground for the current change, showing a path that the company was already exploring and solidifying the market trend.

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment, this is a natural adaptation to new market trends, where the preference for digital content has already largely surpassed the demand for physical discs.
The company reiterated its commitment to providing a top-notch gaming experience for all its consumers.
Piers Harding-Rolls, an analyst at Ampere Analysis, noted that gamers’ preferences when it comes to purchasing games are well defined.
He highlighted that, in 2013, at the launch of the PlayStation 4, only 13% of game sales were digital, but this proportion has grown exponentially, reaching almost 80% in 2025.

Despite the trend, many players still express dissatisfaction with the change.
Content creator and gamer Conkerax, for example, described the situation as a “catastrophe” on his YouTube channel.
Harding-Rolls predicted that the decision will raise significant concerns among PlayStation users, addressing issues such as freedom of choice, compatibility with older physical games on future consoles, the value of collecting physical media and the preservation of game collections.
The analyst also highlighted the negative impact that the digital transition will have on specialized retailers and the game resale market.
Sony’s announcement reignited discussions and speculation about the development of the PlayStation 6 console, the next generation of the platform.
Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners, a video game market research company, commented that Sony’s decision “pretty much confirms that the PS6 will be digital-only.”

Harding-Rolls corroborated the prediction, indicating that the switch to the exclusive digital format could delay the launch of the new console.
Currently, Ampere Analysis projects that the PlayStation 6 will hit the market in late 2028.
