Andy Burnham becomes UK Prime Minister amid instability
The United Kingdom has a new leader in government. Former Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, took over as Prime Minister this Monday, July 20, 2026, succeeding Keir Starmer. Burnham arrives at the post with a promise to “give back hope” to the British and to grant more autonomy to the regions, three days after being elected as the new leader of the Labor Party.

The inauguration ceremony was marked by an official meeting with King Charles III, held this morning, shortly after Keir Starmer formalized his resignation. Following the royal audience, Burnham was officially declared the 59th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
A statement from King Charles confirmed the process: “His Majesty received in audience the Right Honorable Mr. Andrew Burnham, Member of Parliament, and requested him to form a new administration.” After complying with the protocols, the new prime minister went to 10 Downing Street, where he made his first address to the nation.
First words and promises of the new prime minister
In his first statement as head of government, Andy Burnham emphasized the focus of his administration. “Caring for people will be at the center of everything I do,” he said. He also announced that, in 2026, a ten-year plan with new projects for the United Kingdom will be launched.
The prime minister demonstrated full awareness of the challenge ahead, mentioning that he is the seventh person to hold the position since 2016. Among his objectives, he highlighted the need to “raise the level” of politics and, above all, regain public trust. “The United Kingdom needs to show the world that it can regain stability again. This is our challenge,” he declared.
The scenario of recent political instability in the United Kingdom
Andy Burnham’s rise comes at a time of great instability in British politics. He is the third prime minister to assume the role since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, in 2022. The succession of leaders over recent years illustrates a picture of frequent transitions in command of the country.

Path to leadership of the Labor Party
Burnham’s choice as leader of the Labor Party was ratified at an extraordinary congress held on the Friday before the inauguration. His election ended the transition period that began with Keir Starmer’s resignation, announced in June. The process was mostly protocol in nature, as Burnham already had the support of more than three quarters of Labor parliamentarians even before the meeting.
In his inaugural speech as party leader, Burnham defended internal unity and the recovery of credibility in politics. He highlighted that the “strength of this unity” will be dedicated to the people and territories who have been waiting for a long time for politics to give them back hope.
