Xbox is studying major changes to Game Pass after studio dissatisfaction, reveals journalist
Xbox’s Game Pass service is expected to undergo significant changes, as revealed by journalist Jason Schreier in theSaturday, July 18, 2026. Xbox owner Microsoft is facing internal resistance, with studio leaders expressing dissatisfaction and believing the platform devalues games and negatively impacts sales.
“There is a sizable group of studio heads within Xbox who deeply dislike Game Pass, seeing it as driving down the price of their own titles,” Schreier said. “They see it as something that diminished the value of games in general, just as a service, and that contributed immensely to the current scenario, harming the games industry as a whole.”

Journalist Jason Schreier also indicated that Game Pass will probably stop including new releases in its main catalog.

“I believe that while the service will continue to operate, at some point they will simply eliminate Day One launch games as that strategy will no longer make sense,” Schreier added.
These possible changes are part of a context of broad restructuring that Microsoft has implemented in the Xbox division. Recently, the company split up some studios, directed efforts to different franchises and carried out mass layoffs. This new phase marks a significant shift in relation to the previous strategy of constant acquisitions of studios and franchises, highlighting an intense search for greater profitability and financial sustainability in an increasingly competitive gaming market.
