Microsoft has begun a testing phase to offer access to Xbox Cloud Gaming for free, without the need for a Game Pass subscription. However, trial program participants will need to watch advertising before starting gaming sessions.

This initiative is exclusively accessible to members of the Xbox Insider program, enabling the transmission of digital titles already purchased by users directly from the cloud, at no additional cost. The requirement is to display advertisements at the beginning of each session.

The operating model is similar to Nvidia’s GeForce Now service, establishing a maximum time of one hour for each game session with ads. Microsoft assured that this modality is provisional, with a limited duration, according to an official statement released on Xbox Wire.

Users participating in this evaluation phase will see up to two minutes of advertising before each match. If you wish to extend your game time after the first hour, you will need to watch new commercial insertions to start the next session.

The list of games accessible during this testing period includes titles that players already have on their accounts, such as Forza Horizon 6 and 007 First Light, as well as widely known free games such as Call of Duty: Warzone, Genshin Impact and War Thunder.

Subscribers who already have a plan with access to cloud gaming will be exempt from displaying advertisements, maintaining the experience of using the service without advertising interruptions.

The idea that Xbox could offer a free, advertising-supported version of its cloud gaming service had already been discussed the previous year. Official confirmation from Microsoft about the development of this project took place in October 2025.

During that period, there was mention of a possible monthly limit of five hours of free play, information that Microsoft has not yet confirmed whether it will be applied in this current experimental phase.

The announcement of Xbox’s free Xbox Cloud Gaming experiment coincided with the integration of the Amazon Luna service directly into the Prime Video app. Users in the United States and United Kingdom who have a Fire TV device can now access an exclusive gaming tab within the video streaming application itself, at no additional cost for those who are already Prime subscribers.

This almost simultaneous movement, coming from two of the technology sector’s giants, highlights the growing focus on free cloud gaming, whether financed by advertising or included in existing subscriptions. The strategy aims to reach a broad audience of gamers who do not have consoles or high-performance computers dedicated to gaming.
