RPCS3 emulator gains support for older graphics cards on Linux for PlayStation 3
The developers of RPCS3, a PlayStation 3 emulator, announced on July 21, 2026 the expansion of the minimum requirements for the software. The recently released update includes compatibility with ATI Radeon HD 2000, 3000 and 4000 cards on computers running Linux.
This update represents an important change, allowing TeraScale 1 GPUs, originally released between 2007 and 2009, with almost two decades of use, to be taken advantage of. The functionality is exclusive to Linux, depending on the Mesa r600 driver, and will not be accessible in versions of the emulator for Windows or other operating systems.
It’s worth noting that RPCS3 had already implemented support for Radeon HD 5000 and 6000 cards, built on the TeraScale 2 architecture, since 2021. Continuous improvements over the past five years have also resulted in a significant increase in performance for these newer card generations.

As an example of the improvements, in the game Persona 5, a Radeon HD 5850 working in conjunction with an AMD FX-8350 processor and 8 GB of RAM showed a jump from 35 to 49 frames per second (FPS) in the Kamoshida Castle area. This result highlights the substantial gains achieved through constant optimization of the emulator.
Adding support for TeraScale 1 models required modifications to the OpenGL renderer. These older cards, by default, only indicate compatibility with OpenGL 3.3 and GLSL 3.30, specifications that are lower than the versions generally required by RPCS3.

To get around this restriction, the emulator creators implemented a solution, replacing the levels reported by the driver for OpenGL 4.3 and GLSL 4.40. According to the RPCS3 team, this specific adaptation for the Linux environment was relatively simple to carry out.
In a testing phase, the Radeon HD 4890 card, equipped with 1 GB of memory, managed to run some simpler titles with adequate gaming performance. Games like Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and OutRun Online Arcade reached close to 60 FPS, although more visually complex titles still encountered limitations due to the GPU’s capacity.
Even lower-end card models have demonstrated the ability to open certain games after reducing the resolution to approximately 273p. The Radeon HD 3870, for example, maintained acceptable performance in less demanding games, while the HD 2600 XT, with 256 MB, only managed 8 FPS in OutRun and 13 FPS in Portal.
To enable this compatibility, users must run the AppImage version of RPCS3 using the variables MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=4.3 and MESA_GLSL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=440. The development team also reported that there are plans for future optimizations to further improve performance on these older cards.
