BBC documentary exposes abuse allegations against Jared Leto
Jared Leto has long faced problems with his reputation. In addition to public episodes, such as sending rats, dead pigs and used condoms to co-stars in “Suicide Squad” (2016) while playing Joker, disturbing rumors about his personal life have been circulating for years. Now, after a long investigation, the BBC documentary “Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret” has revealed part of these allegations on July 29, 2026.
The BBC’s production is impactful and difficult to watch. The film details decades-old allegations of systematic criminal misconduct against teenagers. The women interviewed report sexual assault, threats of sexual assault, sexual grooming and rape of a vulnerable person. Anonymous former co-workers corroborate the stories, claiming to have witnessed the structure that Leto had set up to entice underage girls at his shows.
What’s particularly sickening about “Hollywood’s Dark Secret” is that it’s not the first time these allegations have come to light. As early as 2005, gossip columns in a New York newspaper reported that the actor was “aggressively pursuing” what were described as “underage objects of desire” in a hotel in the city. In 2018, actor Dylan Sprouse and director James Gunn joked online about Leto’s interest in teenagers. Last year, an investigative report by Elena Clavarino in a digital magazine interviewed nine women who alleged that Leto stalked them, engaged them in sexually explicit phone conversations, exposed himself and masturbated in front of them all while they were minors.

When the report was released, Leto’s representatives issued a statement denying the allegations. Apparently, the artist’s career ran its course, with film promotion and tours with his band. For a while, it seemed as if the allegations had been forgotten.
However, a work with the seriousness of “Hollywood’s Dark Secret” will be more difficult to ignore. Released on YouTube and the BBC to reach the widest possible audience, the documentary offers a disturbing insight into an alleged pattern of chilling behavior. Jessica Sartenaer and her team have put together a case that demonstrates in-depth investigation. Allegations like these are often slow to come to light due to a culture of silence, where victims fear shame or retaliation. Furthermore, many people’s financial interests contribute to keeping the “Jared Leto machine” running for as long as possible.
The fact that Sartenaer managed to find four women and convinced them to expose their faces on screen is quite significant. Although their testimonies deserve to be seen in the documentary, the courage of these women is worthy of applause.
Although the reports are historical, women today are between their 20s, 30s and 40s, it is distressing to see them narrate their experiences when they were teenagers. Some stories follow the Hollywood predator pattern, with victims being taken by Leto’s team to seedy hotel rooms. Others are more intriguing, like a 16-year-old girl who received sexually explicit calls from Leto, and then others from a man she believes to be the actor playing another character.

Adding to these testimonies, the documentary shows archival footage of shows where Leto appears with his arms around young people, appearances on talk shows where he brags about having slept with fans, and an especially disturbing clip in which he quotes a line from the film “The Young, Crazy and Rebels”: “I get older, but they stay the same age.” The cumulative effect is completely disturbing.
So far, Leto has seemed immune to these accusations, but there’s a sense that this film could make a significant impact. It is important to note that the moment of release of the documentary can be a decisive factor. Leto no longer has the same power to attract the box office as before. The film “Tron: Ares,” released last year, reportedly lost about $130 million, and his latest effort, “Masters of the Universe,” is among the year’s biggest flops. While it’s not Hollywood’s best facet of attacking alleged sexual predators only when their financial power wanes, it’s better late than never.
Jared Leto refused to comment on the new accusations to Jessica Sartenaer’s team, contrary to the vehement denial he had given after the digital magazine’s investigation. This raises the question of whether the “floodgates” will finally open to more reporting.
