Pressure increases on River Plate: Coudet remains under protests after negative sequence
River Plate’s situation worsened after the 1-0 defeat to Rosario Central, on August 3, 2026, at the Monumental de Núñez Stadium. The fans expressed their dissatisfaction with the players, the coaching staff and the managers. Despite the intense pressure, coach Eduardo Coudet maintained his position in command of the team after conversations with president Stéfano Di Carlo in the dressing room.
The fans’ discontent was already visible even before the start of the match, with boos aimed at Coudet during the announcement of his name. Throughout the game and after the final whistle, fans chanted “let everyone leave, let none stay” and expressed their rejection of the board, with part of the public even calling for the return of former coach Ramón Díaz.

After the match, Coudet spoke with the squad in the locker room, where, as indicated by the local press, the coach expressed his belief in the team’s ability to recover and called for unity to reverse the bad phase. He then met with president Stéfano Di Carlo to do an in-depth analysis of the team’s current situation.
Coudet’s absence from a press conference after the game intensified speculation about his future. However, the club’s board of directors did not announce any changes to the technical command, confirming that the coach continues to prepare the team for the season’s next commitments.

River Plate has accumulated four consecutive defeats since the end of the World Cup. The goal that sealed Rosario Central’s victory was an own goal scored by Nicolás Otamendi. Even playing at their stadium, River failed to react and were the target of boos as they left the field. The Argentine club made a considerable investment of 28.92 million euros, equivalent to around R$170 million, in the current transfer window for new reinforcements.
Among the athletes who arrived at the club, Ángel Correa, Lucas Beltrán, Rafael Borré, Mauro Arambarri, Giovanni González and Tobias Andrada stand out. Otamendi was hired free of charge. Ángel Correa, considered the main investment of the window, was not on the field against Rosario Central due to an injury.

The internal turmoil occurs amid River’s negotiations to sign Thiago Almada. The Argentine club is competing for the midfielder with Flamengo, and the player shows a preference for returning to his home country. However, Atlético de Madrid, holder of the athlete’s rights, has not yet sealed an agreement with any of the interested teams.
Eduardo Coudet, who had spells at Brazilian clubs such as Atlético-MG and Internacional, took over at River Plate with great expectations, given his identification with the institution, where he played as a player in the 2000s. However, the recent series of defeats and offensive ineffectiveness have intensified the pressure on him ahead of future challenges in the season.
