Sony changes PlayStation 5 packaging and updates information about console features
New PlayStation 5 packaging, produced by Sony Interactive Entertainment, now includes a statement that points to the imminent end of physical media on the platform. The seal functions as a warning about the transition to digital format.
The message contained in the boxes informs that, “from January 2028, games recently released on PlayStation will be available for purchase on the PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only.” The text adds that “discs for games released before January 2028 may continue to be compatible with this console.”

The wording of the warning is careful to indicate that the physical format will still be compatible with the PlayStation 5. However, the warning raises concerns among gamers about the lack of guarantee that the PlayStation 6, or future consoles, will maintain any level of compatibility with physical media, including external readers, impacting the preservation of collections.
The Brazilian Portuguese version of the alert is in line with other languages, which suggests that the warning will soon be implemented on video game boxes sold in Brazil. For now, this information is not yet present on packaging sold on the national market.
Despite protests, boycotts and various criticisms from fans, the Japanese company, on August 6, 2026, publicly stated: “We understand the fans, but let’s move on”. This demonstrates the company’s intention to continue with the total elimination of physical media.
The digital transition scenario is not exclusive to PlayStation. Other companies in the sector are also exploring this path. Nintendo, for example, has already introduced Game-Key Cards and offers more affordable prices on its digital platform, the eShop, encouraging consumers’ preference for digital games.

Similarly, Xbox has developed mechanisms that allow games to be converted from physical media to digital content, through Project Helix. However, this project aims to include a media reader to serve players who wish to maintain their physical collections.
This change in the industry has generated debate, with notable figures such as the director of Final Fantasy 7 taking a stand against PlayStation’s decision and in defense of physical media. Discussion persists over whether other studios will follow suit and voice their opposition to abandoning the records.
