The office of Supreme Court Justice Dias Toffoli confirmed on Thursday his partnership in Maridt, a company tied to his family, which had sold a stake in Resort Tayaya to the Arleen Fund, connected to Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master. Despite this admitted business link, Toffoli’s communication firmly distanced him from Vorcaro and the Arleen Fund, asserting no knowledge of its manager and explicitly denying any intimate friendship or financial dealings with Vorcaro or his brother-in-law, Fabiano Zettel. This statement comes amidst heightened scrutiny over financial operations involving high-profile figures, as federal investigations intensify across the financial sector.

The denial aimed to unequivocally clarify Toffoli’s position regarding individuals now implicated in a major federal investigation, ensuring transparency. It specifically addressed the public perception of personal or financial ties with entities currently under significant legal scrutiny.

Fabiano Zettel, identified as Vorcaro’s brother-in-law, has become a central figure in these investigations, having recently been targeted by the Federal Police.

Toffoli’s business interests and clear denials

The Supreme Court justice’s admission of a Maridt partnership sparked renewed interest in his financial dealings and family business connections. The company, linked to his relatives, played a role in the sale of a significant portion of Resort Tayaya.

This transaction involved the Arleen Fund, which has direct connections to Daniel Vorcaro, the prominent owner of Banco Master, thus placing Toffoli’s family business within the periphery of an ongoing federal inquiry. The minister’s office, however, was swift to issue a comprehensive denial regarding any deeper personal or financial ties.

Toffoli explicitly stated he had no knowledge of Arleen’s management and firmly asserted he maintained no close relationship, whether a casual friendship or an intimate one, with Vorcaro or his brother-in-law, Fabiano Zettel. Furthermore, the statement categorically denied ever receiving any funds from either Vorcaro or Zettel, aiming to dispel any implications of improper financial benefits.

Fabiano Zettel: Target in “Compliance Zero”

Fabiano Zettel, Daniel Vorcaro’s brother-in-law, gained significant public attention after becoming a central figure in the Federal Police’s “Operation Compliance Zero.” He was specifically targeted in the second phase of this extensive investigation, which scrutinizes alleged fraudulent activities within Banco Master.

His temporary detention was executed as a critical measure to protect the confidentiality and integrity of the ongoing probe, a standard procedure often employed in complex financial investigations where premature disclosures could compromise evidence or impede further inquiries.

Airport arrest and defense rebuttal

Zettel’s temporary detention occurred dramatically at Guarulhos International Airport, effectively interrupting a planned business trip to Bahrain. This high-profile arrest immediately drew widespread media attention and raised questions about his intentions.

His legal team swiftly moved to refute any notion of flight risk, presenting compelling evidence of a pre-booked return ticket for February 6, 2025, demonstrating his clear intention to return to the country. They emphasized that the trip was a legitimate and pre-arranged business engagement, not an attempt to evade justice.

The defense lawyers underscored Zettel’s history of lawful business activities, asserting that his entrepreneurial ventures are transparent and entirely separate from Banco Master’s operational management. They maintained his innocence regarding any alleged involvement in the bank’s purported frauds.

Political donations and influence

Beyond his business and legal entanglements, Fabiano Zettel distinguished himself as a significant political donor during the 2022 electoral cycle. His financial contributions underscore his influence within the political landscape, supporting high-profile campaigns.

He channeled a substantial R$ 5 million in total into the political sphere, demonstrating his support for two prominent figures in Brazilian politics. This level of donation placed him among the most generous individual benefactors during that election cycle.

Specifically, R$ 3 million of his donations went to former President Jair Bolsonaro, while R$ 2 million was contributed to the campaign of São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, both of whom secured electoral victories that year. These figures highlight the scale of his financial backing for these campaigns.

These substantial donations positioned Zettel among the top benefactors, notably contributing 2.38% of Bolsonaro’s total campaign funding, which amounted to a significant R$ 126.1 million. This contribution percentage illustrates his considerable impact on the financial aspects of the presidential campaign.

Lagoinha Church and Zettel’s disassociation

Fabiano Zettel previously held the prominent position of president at the Lagoinha Belverde Baptist Church in Belo Horizonte, a role that was publicly registered and widely known within the community. His leadership in the religious institution added another dimension to his public profile.

However, in January, the Lagoinha denomination issued an official statement confirming his detachment from all ministerial and leadership roles within the church. The communiqué explicitly stated that, as of November 2025, Zettel no longer holds any pastoring function, institutional leadership, or any form of representative link with the religious organization, marking a formal separation from his ecclesiastical duties.

“Compliance Zero” operation’s core focus

The “Operation Compliance Zero” is a wide-ranging federal initiative targeting financial institutions suspected of issuing fraudulent credit securities, aiming to uncover and prosecute systemic irregularities. This complex investigation is designed to restore integrity to the financial markets.

The probe delves into serious financial offenses, including allegations of fraudulent management, the operation of organized criminal structures, sophisticated market manipulation tactics, and extensive money laundering schemes, all designed to safeguard the integrity of the National Financial System from illicit practices and ensure regulatory compliance across the banking sector.

Vorcaro’s arrest details

Daniel Vorcaro, Banco Master’s owner, himself faced arrest in November 2025 at Guarulhos International Airport, an event preceding his planned departure to Dubai for business purposes, underscoring the severity of the ongoing “Compliance Zero” operation.
