Applebee’s will close the restaurant at Calexico, at Califórnia. The unit serves the last meal on June 23rd. The move ends more than two decades of operations in the border municipality and leaves almost 30 employees without jobs. The network did not disclose a specific reason for the closure. The case adds to a series of reductions that the company faces throughout 2026.

The closure takes place a month after the closure of Calexico 10 Theatres, another traditional spot in the city. Residentes sees two reference establishments leave the scene in a short space of time. The decision reflects greater adjustments within the casual dining chain.

Rede reduces presence in several regions

Applebee’s has accelerated the pace of closings this year. A franchisee closed ten units after filing for judicial recovery. Neighborhood Restaurant Partners Florida had already closed 14 locations before bankruptcy. Outros points went out of operation in Glenville, in the state of Nova York, McHenry, in Illinois, and two addresses in Evansville, Indiana.

The company projected the loss of 20 to 35 restaurants in 2025 alone. The case of Calexico increases the total number of communities that lose access to an option they have frequented for years. Executivos observe the performance of each unit more rigorously in the face of high costs.

  • Dez franchisee units closed after bankruptcy
  • 14 Neighborhood Restaurant Partners Florida points left before the court case
  • Fechamentos registered to Glenville, McHenry and Evansville
  • Initial Projeção indicated 20 to 35 closures in 2025

Estratégia combines Applebee’s and IHOP

Dine Brands, the parent company, is betting on double restaurants that bring together Applebee’s and IHOP in the same space. The goal is to reach 80 units combined by the end of 2026. The company has already announced 50 new projects for the current year. Estudos internals point to the potential for up to 900 addresses of this model in the next decade.

The format seeks operational efficiency. Applebee’s is strong at lunch and dinner. IHOP dominates breakfast and brunch. Juntos, they serve more periods of the day, reduce fixed costs and increase profitability for franchisees. Dine Brands plans to open more restaurants than in recent years.

The movement signals that the network sees the double concept as a path to expansion, and not just as a way to compensate for losses.

Segmento casual dining faces difficulties

Outras peer networks also reduce operations. Denny’s confirmed plans to close up to 150 units by the end of 2025. Red Lobster announced more than 100 closures under new management. TGI Friday’s maintained the pace of exits after filing for judicial recovery, with 30 outlets closed in April.

Noodles and Company predicted between 17 and 21 closures after a complicated 2024. The sector deals with more expensive foods, changes in customer habits and difficulty hiring employees at competitive salaries. Estabelecimentos that relied on moderate traffic and brand loyalty find greater pressure to generate profit per unit.

Calexico records local impact

The municipality of Calexico, on the border, loses a point that had been operating for more than 20 years. Moradores have accompanied the restaurant for generations. The city is still looking for alternatives for the space that will be vacant from June 23rd. The future of the property remains undefined.

Applebee’s maintains other units in operation at Califórnia. The network evaluates each location individually to define next steps.
