Brian Gutiérrez should start in Mexico’s attack in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, from Guadalajara, is one of Javier Aguirre’s main offensive weapons for the duel against South Africa, this Thursday (11), at the Azteca Stadium, in Mexico City. Kick-off is scheduled for 4pm (Brasília time).
Born on June 17, 2003 in Berwyn, Illinois (USA), Brian Gutiérrez is 1.78m tall and stands out for his creativity, vision of the game, finishing and ability to decide matches. A Mexican-American, he opted for the Mexico national team after playing in the United States’ youth teams and has already accumulated seven caps and two goals with the tricolor shirt.
Gutiérrez’s trajectory and moment
Formed at the Chicago Fire academy, where he played for years in the MLS, Gutiérrez transferred to Guadalajara at the beginning of 2026 and quickly established himself as an important player. With good performances in preparatory friendlies — including goals against Iceland and Ghana — he represents the new Mexican generation. His presence at the premiere symbolizes the mix of talent from the diaspora with Aguirre’s project for the World Cup at home.
Mexico enters as favorite in Group A, which also includes South Korea and the Czech Republic. With the support of more than 87,000 fans at the legendary Azteca, the team needs to get off to a good start in the expanded competition. Gutiérrez will be fundamental in creating chances and exploiting the spaces left by the South African defense.
