Germany debuted at the 2026 World Cup with an overwhelming performance that brought back memories of a historic scoreline. In this Sunday’s clash (14), the German team scored a 7-1 rout over the debuting Curaçao team, in a match that opened the Group E dispute. With the three points added, the European squad took command of the group and established the most elastic score of the current edition of the tournament, surpassing the 4-1 achieved by the United States over Paraguay.

The elastic score inevitably refers to the 2014 semi-final against Brazil, although the current context presents a completely new narrative. Last weekend’s defeat guaranteed the German team 12th place in the ranking of the biggest defeats of all time in the FIFA competition, sharing the position with three other historic matches — including the remarkable clash played in Belo Horizonte.

Scared in the first few minutes and run over in the final stretch

The broad technical superiority of the Europeans was expected, but the clash had a surprising start and overcoming contours. Although the score was opened early, the Central American team tried to break the predictions. 21 minutes into the opening half, Livano Comenencia overcame the experienced Manuel Neuer to equalize the score, generating great celebration in the stands and suggesting a possible upset.

The equality established by Curaçao lasted a short time given the strong pace imposed by Julian Nagelsmann’s men. The count started 6 minutes into the game, when Felix Nmecha took advantage of the offensive sector to find the net. The Caribbean team sought a temporary equalizer, but the European tactical volume stood out before the break: Nico Schlotterbeck broke the tie in the 38th minute, while Kai Havertz increased the advantage in the first half’s injury time.

The additional stage turned the pitch into absolute dominance for the German team. Jamal Musiala scored the fourth goal in the 2nd minute, Nathaniel Brown found the net in the 23rd and Deniz Undav scored the sixth in the 33rd minute. To end the score with dramatic contours for the opponent, Kai Havertz appeared again in the 43rd minute, making the definitive 7-1.

Historical record remains intact

Even with the significant number of goals, the overwhelming victory did not surpass the German federation’s own absolute record in World Cups. The 7-1 scoreline imposed against Curaçao and Brazil is below the country’s most significant triumph in the history of the competition. The main milestone occurred at the opening of the 2002 campaign, when the Germans defeated Saudi Arabia 8-0, in a match that featured three goals from Miroslav Klose, a player who would become the greatest scorer in the history of the tournament with 16 goals scored.
