For the first time in its history of more than thirty years, the acclaimed Toy Story franchise will have one of its films with an indicative rating above “Free” in Brazil. Since its inception in 1995, all feature films, trailers and derivative content have always been released to all audiences until the recent announcement.
The Ministry of Justice reported that the content of “Toy Story 5” presents, at a moderate level, elements such as the considered representation of sadness, low-offensive language and violence of a fantasy nature. Furthermore, there is a low occurrence of violent acts and situations of bullying or cyberbullying in the plot.
Thus, the federal government established the classification of “not recommended for children under 6 years of age” for “Toy Story 5”. This category is relatively new and has specific details about its application.
Details of the 6-year indicative rating
The recent classification was established in October 2025, the result of an initiative by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), through the General Coordination of Indicative Classification of the National Secretariat for Digital Rights (Sedigi).
This new rating guideline is now in full effect and was therefore applied to the film “Toy Story 5” at the time of its review.
Yes, parents and guardians can accompany children under 6 years old to watch the film. The MJSP reiterates that the final responsibility for adapting the content to the age of their children lies with families, using as a basis the information released by the authorities.
The implementation of this new age group responds to studies that pointed out a gap between the “Free” classification and “not recommended for children under 10”, which was the standard in force until October 2025. Experts highlight that early exposure to inappropriate audiovisual materials can compromise the understanding of reality and cause negative impacts on children’s socio-emotional development.
News about the production of Toy Story 5
Officially announced in February 2023, “Toy Story 5” will continue the narrative started in the films released by Pixar between 1995 and 2019. The plot will follow the adventures of Woody, voiced by Tom Hanks in the original version, Buzz Lightyear, with the voice of Tim Allen, and the other toys that come to life when their owners are not around.
In the next chapter of the saga, which will have Jessie as one of the central figures and will mark the return of Woody, Buzz and Fork, the toys will face a new challenge. The attention of Bonnie, its current owner, will be diverted by an innovative children’s tablet called LilyPad, which supposedly offers the best for the child.
A completely new character making her debut in the film will be Smarty Pants, a doll designed to assist Bonnie with toilet training. In the English version, the character will be voiced by renowned comedian Conan O’Brien.
Released in 1995, the first “Toy Story” was Pixar’s debut production and marked a revolution in the world of animation with the introduction of 3D technology, which became a fundamental pillar of the studio, later acquired by Disney. The franchise is Pixar’s most successful, with “Toy Story 3” and “Toy Story 4” each surpassing the $1 billion box office mark.
With the inclusion of the spin-off “Lightyear”, released in 2022, the franchise’s total revenue at the global box office already exceeds US$3.2 billion. All films in the series are available for streaming on the Disney+ platform.
“Toy Story 5” is directed by Andrew Stanton, known for works such as “Wall-E” and “Finding Nemo”, who also wrote the script along with McKenna Harris, a Pixar artist who collaborated on productions such as “Luca” and “Elements”. The film is scheduled to premiere on June 17th.
