Striker Gonzalo Plata, a fundamental player for Flamengo, ended the group stage of the World Cup as one of the highlights of the Ecuador team. He scored the second goal in the 2-1 victory against Germany, this Thursday, at Metlife Stadium, consolidating Ecuador’s place in the knockout stage of the tournament.
After the match, which marked the end of the group stage for the team, Plata celebrated Ecuador’s turnaround in the fight for a position in the round of 16. The team had suffered a defeat to Ivory Coast in the opening match, followed by a draw with Curaçao, and needed a decisive victory against Germany to accumulate four points and advance as one of the best third-placed teams, demonstrating resilience and the ability to overcome under pressure.
Promise of maximum effort in the next stages of the tournament
“At this moment, we will enter the field with total intensity, willing to build our future in the championship, regardless of previous results. The initial challenges should not get us down. We are united, with great faith and trust in each member of the group. The 26 athletes will do everything for this nation that supports us”, declared the player.
The striker also commented on the disappointment of the Ecuadorian team with the initial performance below expectations in the first games of the World Cup. With two unfavorable results before the clash against Germany, the team absolutely needed victory to guarantee its continuity in the championship; a different result would mean early elimination.
“I believe that our expectations were higher before the start of the competition. We went through difficult times in the first two matches. We would have liked to have achieved classification sooner, but, in some way, I believe that this trajectory made us stronger”, said Plata.
Now, with Gonzalo Plata in the spotlight, the Ecuador national team awaits the definition of their next opponent in the second phase of the World Cup. The opponent will only be known after the group stage has completely ended.
