Even three years after its release, Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to be a focus of debate and constant development of new mods by the community. Recently, one modification in particular has gained widespread popularity, leading some fans to suggest that developer Larian Studios consider incorporating similar ideas into its future projects. On the other hand, there are those who see the use of this tool as a “heresy” to the essence of the game.

The mod in question, called “True Third-Person Camera”, was created by Relysia and made available on Nexus Mods in early July 2026. It introduces a modern third-person view, with the camera positioned over the character’s shoulder, keeping them in close proximity to the action. The feature also includes a dynamic field of view (FOV) when running and fluid transitions when crouching.

In this game mode, the camera maintains a fixed distance from the character, ensuring an immersive and close-up experience. While performing specific actions, such as aiming spells, jumping, or investigating objects, the camera temporarily switches to the game’s default perspective and automatically returns to over-the-shoulder mode after the action is completed.

This approach departs significantly from the original Baldur’s Gate 3 camera, which adopts a top-down isometric view characteristic of classic computer RPGs. Essentially, the mod offers PC gamers the ability to explore the realm of Faerûn in a way reminiscent of titles like BioWare’s Dragon Age or CD Projekt’s The Witcher.

Relysia’s modification gained widespread visibility after the “Brator News” account on platform X (formerly Twitter) released a video demonstrating this new camera perspective. To date, the video has recorded more than 3.9 million views, boosting discussion on the topic.

The video quickly sparked an intense debate. Many reacted with outrage to the idea of experiencing Baldur’s Gate 3 with this setup. Critics argue that the changes introduced by the new camera perspective are incompatible with Larian Studios’ cRPG design, especially with regard to exploration and combat. For them, the benefits of greater immersion are outweighed by the satisfaction provided by the genre’s traditional gameplay.

Although it is an optional mod, the reasoning that it is enough not to use it has not stopped complaints. Many people began to view modifications like this as a type of affront to the cRPG genre itself, raising questions about the identity and integrity of games.

“Not every game needs to be playable from every camera angle,” said user manwe on Platform complete lack of understanding about how game development actually works.”

Many other demonstrations followed this line of thought. “Players who want to turn CRPGs into LARPs are really a plague on the genre after Baldur’s Gate,” said user vetha, also on

“I swear I don’t understand this obsession with wanting every game to be the same third-person experience and not respecting someone’s artistic choice,” commented user wolfy on X. He further compared: “Cyberpunk gets the same criticism, especially when the core experience depends on the first-person perspective.”

On the other hand, a portion of the community is praising the modification. X user Tarik revealed that he has been playing Baldur’s Gate 3 this way for a long time and considers the experience “extremely fun”. He made a public plea to Larian Studios for the company to “seriously reconsider what players have been asking for.”

He explained that “The popularity of WASD motion mods and Native Camera Tweaks shows that there is a real demand for this style of gameplay.” Tarik also argued that these features “even attracted people who wouldn’t normally play a CRPG.”

“During the recent Divinity Q&A session, you said that these features would not be in the game. As someone who truly admires and respects your work, I sincerely hope that you reconsider that decision,” Tarik said, directing his message to the developer.

He added that “Making these features optional—disabled by default but available to anyone who wants to use them—doesn’t seem like an unreasonable request. This would allow players to enjoy the game the way they prefer, without altering the experience for those who enjoy the classic controls.”

Tarik’s message concluded: “Please Larian, listen to your players. We love your games, and many of us genuinely believe these features would make them even better.”

This appeal has also received criticism from those who advocate that Larian Studios maintain fidelity to the cRPG style, not only in Divinity, but in all of its future releases. “I when I want my cRPG to not play like a cRPG,” one person noted in response to the thread.

This raises a crucial question about design choices: should Larian incorporate optional WASD and camera movement controls in addition to traditional cRPG methods? Tarik shot back, saying, “It’s funny how some of you insist on pretending that optional features somehow erase the game’s identity.”

He continued: “No one is asking Larian to remove click movement, force a third-person camera, or replace turn-based combat. We are asking for optional WASD movement and camera control features that players can enable or ignore.”

“If your preferred way of playing remains completely unchanged, why do you feel so threatened by someone else having a different option?” asked Tarik. He argued that “Labeling any third-person game as ‘just another Witcher clone’ is an extremely shallow argument. Camera controls do not define a game’s genre; what defines it are its mechanics, systems, and design philosophy. Baldur’s Gate 3 would remain a turn-based cRPG based on D&D rules, regardless of whether I move using WASD or clicking on the ground.”

Tarik concluded his defense by stating, “Giving players more options doesn’t take anything away from you. It just gives more people another way to enjoy the same game.”

A notable aspect of this mod’s repercussion is the great appreciation shown by the public for Dragon Age: Origins. The modification makes Baldur’s Gate 3 reminiscent of BioWare’s fantasy RPG released in 2009, something that many noticed. Subsequent games in the Dragon Age franchise have moved away from Origins’ systems, mechanics, and even classic RPG atmosphere. The most recent release, the widely criticized Dragon Age: The Veilguard, practically compromised the series. However, in the current age of remakes, it is plausible to imagine the success of a recreation of Dragon Age: Origins, a scenario that many would consider very successful.

Regarding Baldur’s Gate 3 and Larian Studios, there is no possibility of an official update that implements the gameplay offered by this mod, as the developer has already announced that it will no longer release major updates for the game. Furthermore, this functionality does not appear to be in the plans for the company’s future titles. Larian confirmed in January that Divinity’s camera will work in a “very similar” way to that of Baldur’s Gate 3. Therefore, a similar standard is expected when the long-awaited successor to Baldur’s Gate 3, produced by the same developer, is finally released. If this decision causes discontent, it is likely that, over time, a third-person camera mod for Divinity will also appear.
