Sony maintains that the PlayStation 5 maintains its accessibility advantage over gaming computers, ensuring sufficient differentiation even with the imminent transition to an exclusively digital model. The company defends its strategy in the gaming market.
During the presentation of the financial results for the first quarter of 2026, Lin Tao, CEO and CFO of Sony, addressed the negative repercussions generated by the decision to eliminate support for physical discs on PlayStation consoles, starting in January 2028. She acknowledged fans’ discontent, but reiterated Sony’s intention to proceed with the plan, expressing confidence that the measure will not compromise the brand’s business. This move signals a significant strategic shift in the video game industry, directing the brand towards a fully digital ecosystem.
Later, Minami Hase, senior analyst at Goldman Sachs, questioned whether the end of disc production could distort the PlayStation, bringing it too close to the PC platform, which has long since abandoned physical media.

In response, Tao stated that discs have never represented an essential element to distinguish PlayStation consoles from PCs. The executive highlighted that the real differentiators continue to be the careful selection of content, the offering of a “stable gaming environment” and greater accessibility when compared to the latest generation PCs.
“We don’t believe that the disc is the factor that differentiates us from PC games. On PC, there are specific ways to play, and the range is limited. Our strong point is curated content, and the stability of the gaming environment is another strong point. Compared to high-end gaming PCs, our product is more affordable. We don’t believe that the disc itself is a determining factor for differentiation. In the future, we can coexist peacefully with PC games,” said Lin Tao.

However, affordability was slightly impacted by a recent appreciation in the prices of memory and storage components, leading Sony to adjust the prices of its products at the end of March.
Price comparison of PlayStation 5 consoles
- PS5 with disc player: €649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition: €599.99
- PS5 Pro: €899.99
It is clear that the components for assembling a PC have also undergone considerable increases. The competing Xbox Series X console, which includes a disc player, currently costs €799 in Europe, a higher price.
Given this, Tao’s argument may be confirmed: the PlayStation maintains its position as the most accessible console, and the controversy surrounding the discs may be secondary to its distinction. However, if the rumor about Microsoft maintaining disc support on the next Xbox comes to fruition, the company could win over physical media enthusiasts, although this could represent a financial cost.
