The Spotify streaming service promoted new increases in monthly subscription fees, with an initial focus on the United States. As revealed by sources linked to the company’s global operations, the increase in values occurred during the first quarter of 2026. Although the change began in the American market, this measure was already expected by sector experts and tends to be extended to other nations.

Understand the reasons behind the rise in Spotify’s values

The decision to raise prices derives, in part, from global inflation and the demand from the main record companies for constant updates in the costs of streaming services, justifying that monthly fees have not kept up with the appreciation in recent years. In August 2025, Spotify had already implemented adjustments in a series of markets, covering South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Latin America.

In the United States, the last price change was in June 2024, the date on which the individual subscription reached the level of US$11.99 per month. Currently, the application offers three more paid options: Student for US$5.99, Duo for US$16.99 and Family for US$19.99, each designed to meet different consumer needs.

The most relevant point for Brazilian users is that, even though the reports deal exclusively with the North American market, the company’s trajectory indicates a policy of readjustments on a global scale. Therefore, the increase in the United States, which was confirmed at the beginning of 2026, is a strong indication that Brazil should also be impacted soon, following the sector’s logic.

In the national territory, the most recent adjustment occurred in August 2025, affecting all types of plans with the following changes:

  • University: went from R$11.90 to R$12.90
  • Individual: the price changed from R$21.90 to R$23.90
  • Duo: increased from R$27.90 to R$31.90
  • Family: went from R$34.90 to R$40.90

The Family plan, which presents itself as the highest value option and allows up to six Premium accounts in the same household, recorded the steepest percentage increase. Despite including tools such as parental control, distinct profiles and shared playlists, the modality was the target of controversy due to the substantial increase of approximately 17%.

Arrival of lossless audio for Spotify Premium subscribers

After a considerable period of expectations and delays, Spotify has started releasing the expected lossless audio for Premium plan users. The functionality, which had been under discussion on the platform since 2017, was added at no extra cost and is now available in more than 50 nations, with rollout expected to be completed by October 2025. This move positions Spotify more in line with competitors that already offer superior audio quality, such as Apple Music and Amazon Music. However, in August 2026, this innovation has not yet reached Brazil.

With the implementation, Spotify now makes it possible to play tracks in FLAC format up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, a standard that ensures a sound experience without any loss of quality compared to the original file. In practice, this characteristic translates into songs with greater detail in terms of timbre, dynamic variation and clarity, eliminating the imperfections associated with compression in formats such as OGG or AAC.

The platform advises using Wi-Fi or wired connections for listening, as conventional Bluetooth technology is not capable of transmitting lossless audio. Since launch, the feature has been compatible with devices from manufacturers such as Sony, Bose, Samsung and Sennheiser, and integration with systems from Sonos and Amazon was planned for the month following initial implementation.
