Maresca comments on Chelsea’s ultimatum for Enzo Fernández and predicts that City will not make an offer
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has expressed his view that the club has little chance of meeting Chelsea’s “ultimatum” for the acquisition of midfielder Enzo Fernández. This occurred on August 14, 2026, the date on which the situation became public.
The London club, Chelsea, informed Manchester City and other interested parties that the deadline to submit a proposal worth 120 million pounds (equivalent to R$842 million) for the Argentine player was 5pm UK time (1pm Brasília time) on August 14, 2026.

Sources close to the negotiation indicate that the Manchester team is interested in Enzo Fernández’s football. However, Chelsea made it clear that it would no longer accept proposals for the athlete after the established limit, tightening the conditions.
During a press conference, Maresca expressed his skepticism regarding this signing for City.

“I do not consider it appropriate to discuss athletes linked to other associations. Likewise, I believe it is inappropriate when other teams comment on our players. For this reason, I will not comment on Enzo Fernández”, argued the coach.
He further added, “But to be honest, I don’t foresee any negotiations happening today. I don’t believe we will make any moves for Enzo at this point.”
At this point in the transfer window, City has already invested £116 million (equivalent to R$112 million) in signing midfielder Elliot Anderson, who arrived from Nottingham Forest, signaling a priority in other areas of the squad.

On the other hand, midfielder Bernardo Silva has already left the team, and another player in the same position, Tijjani Reijnders, is close to being sold to Al Qadsiah, from Saudi Arabia, for 51 million pounds (around R$357.6 million). These moves suggest a restructuring of the squad that could influence future financial decisions, making a large additional investment in Enzo Fernández less likely.
