Researchers identify doctor in Pompeii through his surgical instruments
The work of several teams allowed the identification of a doctor among the victims of the Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD. The plaster cast that represented him held a case containing the tools used by health professionals at that time, a discovery announced on May 15, 2026.
A medical professional was found while trying to escape the eruption of Vesuvius, carrying with him the instruments in his area. This is the most recent and remarkable revelation of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, occurring more than six decades after the excavation of the Orto dei Fuggiaschi.

The essential information emerged from the examination of a small case that was hidden within the plaster of a human cast. The artifact was discovered during investigations led by Amedeo Maiuri in 1961. The area, which at the time was a vineyard, revealed that the molds belonged to fourteen individuals surprised by the pyroclastic cloud in a desperate attempt for salvation.
Recent investigations of the materials stored in the deposits of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii have brought to light a personal set of great relevance: a small box made of organic matter with metallic details, a fabric bag with bronze and silver coins, and a collection of instruments compatible with a medical kit.

Diagnostic analyzes using X-rays and computed tomography, carried out at the Maria Rosaria Nursing Home, showed the presence of a slate plate inside the box — possibly used to prepare medicinal or cosmetic substances — and small metallic items that could be interpreted as surgical tools. These findings reinforce the theory that the victim practiced medicine, offering rare and valuable evidence about his profession.
Advanced technologies and interdisciplinary research reveal secrets
The application of cutting-edge diagnostic technologies, including computerized tomography with the aid of artificial intelligence and 3D reconstructions, made it possible to analyze the mold contents without compromising its integrity. This approach opens new perspectives for the study of Pompeian molds and has also revealed previously unknown aspects of the safe’s complex mechanical design, such as a cogwheel locking system.
The research is the result of a multidisciplinary effort that brought together archaeologists, restorers, physical anthropologists, archaeobotanists, numismatists, radiologists, diagnostic technicians and experts in digital modeling. Together, they worked to rescue not just an object, but the story of a life abruptly interrupted.
“Two thousand years ago, there were those who were not just doctors at set times, but doctors at all times — even at the moment of escape from the eruption, interrupted by the pyroclastic cloud that enveloped a group of fugitives trying to leave the city through Porta Nocera,” said Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the park.
Zuchtriegel concluded: “This man carried his tools to be prepared to start his life again in another place, thanks to his profession, but perhaps also to help other people. We dedicate this discovery, small but significant, to all the women and men who today continue to practice this profession with a high sense of responsibility and service to the community.”
