Samsung has incorporated practical and effective technology into its new Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 smartwatches. Known as Seamless Updates, this function, already present in some of the brand’s cell phones, promises more agile and less complicated software updates. This advancement is especially valuable for reducing device downtime, essential for those who rely on the watch for constant monitoring, but unfortunately will not be available for previous models due to hardware limitations.

The discovery of the new feature was made by user Salian, who disclosed the information on X/Twitter when installing the August update on the Galaxy Watch 9. With the implementation of this Seamless Updates system, the entire process of downloading and preparing the software takes place in the background. This means that the user can continue using the watch normally, whether to check notifications or monitor health data, without interruptions.

Once the software preparation is complete, the device only waits for a brief reboot by the user, at a time that is most convenient. This methodology considerably reduces the period in which the watch becomes unusable, something that often causes frustration with conventional system updates.

Also known as A/B system updates, this approach goes beyond a simple software change. It requires a specific storage architecture and hardware, designed to operate with two system partitions simultaneously. Due to this need for physical structure, older models in the Galaxy line are not compatible with the functionality and will not receive it through a standard software update.

Given the dependence on specific partitions in storage, the Seamless Updates feature will be a unique differentiator for the Galaxy Watch 9 series and future generations. This confirms that predecessor models will not have access to the functionality, even those that are updated to One UI 9 Watch, which is currently in the beta testing phase. The expectation is that, in the future, all Samsung watches will incorporate this method as standard, optimizing the user experience.
