Marvel Studios confirmed that Patrick Stewart, known for playing Charles Xavier, Professor X, will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday. The news came during a live event on March 26, 2025, and marks the actor’s return to the character he played in the Fox-produced X-Men films.

Stewart has played the character in the MCU before. He appeared as a variant of Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, released in 2022, where the Scarlet Witch killed him. His new role may be a different version of the character or part of a wider multiverse storyline, and the plot details of the film remain under wraps.

Stewart joins other X-Men veterans in the film. Kelsey Grammer, who played Hank McCoy, the Beast, in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and made a cameo in The Marvels (2023), is also returning. Ian McKellen, the Magneto of the Fox films, is part of the same group of actors.

Official cast list pairs X-Men veterans with newcomers

The cast reveal was broadcast live on social media on March 26, 2025, with personalized chairs shown one by one. Beyond the mutants, Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Anthony Mackie (Captain America) were confirmed, along with newcomers Simu Liu (Shang-Chi) and Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova). Directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who led Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, are back behind the camera.

Robert Downey Jr. plays Victor von Doom in the film, a role first announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. With Stewart and the other mutants added, the film’s ambitions have grown, and the story is expected to center on a multiversal threat led by Downey’s villain.

Mutants join the Avengers in a multiversal battle

Charles Xavier leads the mutants and founded a school for gifted young people. He is known for his telepathy and his pursuit of peace between humans and mutants. Stewart’s role raises questions about how the character will return, either as another variant or inside the main MCU continuity.

The roster of returning mutants adds further intrigue. Xavier’s long rivalry with Magneto, a foil he has faced on screen before, could return on a larger stage in the MCU. Together, these characters hint at a significant X-Men presence in the fight against Doctor Doom.

  • Beast (Kelsey Grammer): connected the Fox and MCU worlds through his cameo in The Marvels.
  • Magneto (Ian McKellen): brings a historic rivalry with Xavier to the MCU.

Bridging the Fox and MCU universes

The mutants’ arrival in the shared universe has been a long wait since Disney acquired Fox in 2019. Earlier cameos, including Stewart’s in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Grammer’s in The Marvels, laid the groundwork. The film comes before Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for 2027, and closes the Multiverse Saga that spans Phases 4, 5 and 6.

Casting veterans serves two purposes, reaching longtime fans and introducing these characters to newer audiences. Stewart played Xavier across seven X-Men films, and his return comes despite the character’s deaths in Logan and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Principal photography began on April 28, 2025, at Pinewood Studios in England, and filming wrapped on September 19, 2025. Location filming took place in Bahrain, and reports suggested the production could feature up to 60 characters.

What the story may reveal about Doctor Doom’s plan

Marvel has not revealed the plot details of Avengers: Doomsday, but the inclusion of Xavier and other mutants points to a multiverse-driven story. Doctor Doom is known for his intellect, sorcery and desire to conquer realities. Fans have asked whether Xavier and the X-Men could face a Doom who manipulates alternate universes.

Xavier’s telepathy and leadership could make him a counterpoint to Doom’s intelligence. The Xavier-Magneto rivalry could also unfold on a larger stage, with the two possibly teaming up with the Avengers.

Release date moves to December 18, 2026

Avengers: Doomsday was first scheduled for May 2, 2025, and later moved to May 1, 2026. In May 2025, Disney delayed the film again to December 18, 2026, to allow more time for production to be completed. The studio says the film opens exclusively in theaters, and tickets are on sale for Infinity Vision certified theaters.

  • May 2, 2025: first release date
  • May 1, 2026: date before the latest delay
  • December 18, 2026: current release date in the United States

Stewart’s return and the MCU’s next phase

Stewart’s return is more than a cameo, and it reflects the MCU’s move to fully embrace the X-Men legacy. The Multiverse Saga, launched in 2021 with WandaVision and Loki, reaches its climax with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Stewart’s casting has also raised speculation about the X-Men’s long-term future in the MCU. Marvel could set up a full mutant reboot with younger actors after the film, though that remains speculation.

Xavier’s film appearances from 2000 to 2022

Patrick Stewart‘s Xavier appears across Fox and MCU films, starting with the first X-Men film in 2000. The key moments of his run include the following.

  • X-Men (2000), directed by Bryan Singer, the start of the modern superhero film era.
  • Logan (2017), Stewart’s final Fox timeline role, in which Xavier dies.
  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), where a variant Xavier is killed by the Scarlet Witch.

What fans can expect from the December release

Stewart’s return shows the MCU’s shift toward combining veterans and newcomers in one cast. Fans are also watching how Xavier will interact with heroes such as Thor, Captain America and Shang-Chi.

The film opens exclusively in theaters on December 18, 2026. Pre-sales had reached US$ 50 million by early September 2026, 100 days before the release.
