Toyota will unveil the new SW4 worldwide on December 1, 2026, the company confirmed. The SUV, sold as the Fortuner in many international markets, will debut first in Asia and Africa. Brazil is expected to receive it at some point during 2027.
The date was confirmed by Toyota South Africa Motors, the automaker’s South African division, and by its operation in Thailand. In South America, the SUV will arrive months after the new Hilux pickup, which is scheduled to reach dealers in the region still in 2026. Supply for Brazil and neighboring countries will remain concentrated at the Zárate plant in Argentina, a complex that recently received an investment of R$ 7.2 billion.
What changes in the design and cabin of the new SW4
The SUV will get a broad aesthetic and technology overhaul to match the update applied to the Hilux, with which it shares its mechanical structure. Despite changes to the body and interior trim, Toyota will keep the IMV platform (Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle, the automaker’s global architecture for commercial and utility vehicles), used since 2002. The three-row layout for up to seven occupants will also stay.
Prototypes spotted in road tests suggest slimmer LED headlights, a taller and redesigned hood, and an updated bumper. The grille will be larger, with a honeycomb mesh following the style of the RAV4 and Corolla Cross. At the rear, the taillights will be linked by an LED light bar across the full width of the tailgate.

Inside, the cabin will get a reworked dashboard with straight lines, inspired by the new Hilux, Land Cruiser and Tacoma. The equipment package will include a configurable digital instrument cluster, seats with a new design focused on comfort, and an expanded set of driver assistance features classified as ADAS Level 2 (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, which help with steering and braking in a semi-autonomous way).
Mild hybrid system and technical specs of the new SW4
The main mechanical novelty is a mild hybrid system, known as MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle, a technology in which a small electric motor helps the combustion engine without driving the wheels alone). The electric unit helps in initial acceleration and aims to cut fuel use and pollutant emissions. It works alongside the turbodiesel engine already used in the current line.

How Chinese SUVs challenged the SW4’s sales lead in Brazil
The current generation launched in 2016 and has been built at the Zárate line since 1997. For years, the model led sales in its category in Brazil, with monthly volumes above those of direct rivals with body-on-frame chassis, such as the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and the Chevrolet Trailblazer. That scenario changed with the arrival of Chinese manufacturers, especially after the GWM Haval H9 entered the segment and beat the Toyota in monthly registrations on more than one occasion.
Toyota has not disclosed official prices or an exact date for sales of the restyled model at Brazilian dealers in 2027. The company also has not confirmed whether the 48-volt mild hybrid will be available in Brazil at launch or added to the national lineup later.
