As autumn 2026 officially commences at 11:45 AM next Friday, the season’s initial embrace across Brazil is not expected to deliver immediate respite from the heat. Forecasters anticipate a beginning characterized by stuffy conditions, scattered rain showers, and persistently high temperatures.

A more pronounced change in weather patterns, bringing cooler temperatures and a true autumnal feel, is projected to materialize only later, typically from May onwards. This delay suggests that Brazilians should prepare for a prolonged period of summer-like conditions before the chill sets in.

Recent weeks saw temporary temperature drops in some southern and southeastern cities, leading many to believe autumn had arrived prematurely. However, meteorologists clarify these were isolated events, not indicative of the broader seasonal trend.

Unseasonably Warm Start Predicted for Autumn 2026

Despite the calendar turning to a new season, the prevailing atmospheric conditions indicate that the initial phase of autumn 2026 will largely mirror late summer. Regions across the country should brace for continued warmth and high humidity, accompanied by convective rainfall.

Experts explain that the atmosphere does not adhere strictly to astronomical dates. The transition from summer to autumn is a gradual process influenced by broader meteorological factors, meaning colder air masses often take time to establish themselves over the continent.

March’s Cold Snap: A Fleeting Anomaly

A temporary dip in temperatures recently surprised residents in parts of the South and Southeast, with cities like Curitiba recording a maximum of 21.1°C, its lowest so far this year. São Paulo experienced 22.3°C, marking its coolest March day since 2024, while Rio de Janeiro registered a relatively fresh 24.2°C afternoon.

This localized cooling event was attributed to the passage of a more intense cold front than typically observed for March, which pushed a significant mass of cold air into these specific areas. The combination of moist winds, increased cloud cover, and frequent rainfall contributed to the temporary temperature reductions.

However, meteorologists were quick to emphasize that this phenomenon did not signal an early arrival of autumn. Such occasional climatic shifts can occur even during the peak of summer, and they do not alter the overall seasonal prognosis.

Prolonged Summer Conditions Through April

April is expected to sustain characteristics reminiscent of the summer months, with widespread heat, a lingering sensation of stuffiness, and recurrent rain showers across various Brazilian regions. This pattern underscores the slow progression toward more temperate weather.

The expectation is that, as the recent cold air mass dissipates, temperatures will rebound and likely rise again throughout the final week of summer and into the early days of autumn. This ensures the first month of the new season maintains its warmer profile.

Significant Cooling Trend Emerges in May

A more noticeable and sustained cooling trend is anticipated to commence primarily in May. This period historically marks a turning point as the gradual reduction in daylight hours begins to favor the establishment of milder temperatures across Brazil.

Forecasters project that the first intense polar air mass of the autumn season could make its way into Brazil during the transition between May and June. This weather event carries the potential to significantly alter the thermal landscape.

Should this scenario materialize, southern Brazil might experience a more pronounced cold snap, including the possibility of frost, particularly in higher altitude areas. Cities in the Southeast, such as São Paulo, could see minimum temperatures drop to around 10°C, a significant shift from the preceding months.

This mid-season shift represents the true onset of colder weather, moving beyond the transient fluctuations observed earlier in the year.

Navigating Forecast Uncertainties

Meteorologists consistently highlight that long-range weather forecasts, by their very nature, remain subject to change. As new atmospheric data is continuously gathered and analyzed in the coming weeks, projections can be refined or altered.

The science of predicting weather patterns over several months involves complex models and variables, making absolute certainty challenging. Therefore, while current trends point to a specific outlook, flexibility in expectations is always advised.

Until further data confirms a definitive shift, the early part of autumn is expected to proceed with elevated heat, high humidity levels, and frequent episodes of rain across a substantial portion of the country, reinforcing the need for ongoing monitoring.

Understanding Global Climate Context

The discussion around shifting seasonal patterns and the intensity of rainfall events frequently intersects with broader climate change conversations. While specific events are not directly attributable, the general trend toward more extreme weather, including heavier precipitation, is a subject of ongoing scientific research and public awareness globally.
