Lucas Chumbo survived a stunning accident while surfing giant waves at Sydney, at Austrália, this Sunday. The heavy sea specialist was thrown against the rocks after being swallowed by a wave in the region of Cape Solander, in Kurnell. Despite the severity of the fall, the Brazilian athlete did not suffer serious injuries and used social media to share the record of the moment.
The incident occurred during the passage of a large swell off the Australian coast, attracting surfers from different parts of the world. Chumbo, who was accompanied by skimboard champion Lucas Fink, used a jet ski to enter the wave, but ended up losing his balance when trying to complete a tube. The impact generated immediate reactions from names like Gabriel Medina, Italo Ferreira and Filipe Toledo, who showed concern about their compatriot’s audacity.
The accident on the rocks of Cape Solander
The region of Cape Solander is famous for the formation of “slabs”, which are extremely heavy waves that break in shallow waters, very close to coral banks or rock formations. In the video recorded by Lucas Fink, it is possible to see the exact moment in which Chumbo tries to maneuver inside the wave, but the force of the foam throws him directly into the area of rocks.
The rescue was watched with tension by those at the scene, as the surfer disappeared for a few seconds amid the impact of the waters. The use of safety equipment was essential to avoid a tragedy at the site. The dynamics of the accident followed the following points:
- Enter the wave with the help of a jet ski (tow-in) to gain speed.
- Attempt positioning for the tube in a critical section of the wave.
- Fall after the board is hit by the turbulence of the internal foam.
- Throwing the body against the rocky structure on the coast of Kurnell.
- Positive signal from the surfer indicating that he was conscious and unharmed.
Repercussion between the WSL world champions
Posting the video on social media quickly became the center of attention in the professional surfing community. Gabriel Medina, three-time world champion, commented on the publication calling his friend “crazy”, while other members of the World Surf League (WSL) elite also left messages of relief and astonishment. The courage of Chumbo is internationally recognized, but the level of danger of this particular session exceeded the usual standards even for experts.
Italo Ferreira and Filipe Toledo also reacted to the risky maneuver, highlighting that the Cape Solander wave offers little margin for error. The sea at Sydney was especially dangerous due to the direction of the wind and the strength of the currents, which increases the risk of encounters with the rock bench. Lucas Fink’s narration in the video reflects the momentary panic of those watching the sand scene, repeatedly asking if Chumbo was injured after the impact.
Preparing for giant waves at Austrália
Lucas Chumbo traveled to Austrália with the specific aim of chasing the biggest swells of the season in the country of Oceania. Conhecido for his performances in Nazaré in Portugal and Jaws in Havaí, the Brazilian uses rigorous physical preparation to withstand the pressure of the water and possible shocks. The use of a helmet was cited by experts as a determining factor for him to emerge unharmed from contact with the rocks.
In addition to the danger of rocks, the Australian coast poses additional challenges such as the constant presence of sharks and sudden changes in the weather. Chumbo, however, minimized the scare in his caption, treating the episode as part of a storm chaser’s routine. Ele reinforced that he will continue to monitor the giant swell in the region to carry out new descents, maintaining the focus on recording extreme images for his audiovisual projects.
The episode serves as a warning about the danger of shallow bank waves, which even for experienced professionals, pose a risk of death or permanent injury. Safety in heavy seas involves a trained support team with jet skis and constant monitoring of weather conditions. In the case of Sydney, the rescue team acted quickly to ensure the surfer was removed from the impact zone before the next series of waves arrived.
