Film director Michael Mann, 83, was taken to hospital after a gun discharged accidentally during target practice in Los Angeles on October 31, 2026. The shooting happened at about 4 p.m. local time at The Range LA, a sanctioned gun range where Mann was practicing. According to his representative, he was trying to holster the weapon when it fired, and he has decades of experience as a target shooter.
Paramedics took the filmmaker to a nearby medical unit in stable condition. A spokesperson for the director said doctors classified the injury as low severity, with no risk to his physical integrity and no need for invasive surgery.
Police classify shooting at The Range LA as accidental
Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department went to The Range LA to isolate the booth and investigate the emergency call. Early findings from the units that attended the call determined the discharge happened while Mann was handling the weapon, ruling out any outside action or intent. He received immediate care inside the sports complex before the ambulance arrived.
Relatives and assistants said Mann stayed conscious throughout medical triage. The hospital team began discharge procedures a few hours after the dressing was applied.
