The Australian Nick Kyrgios and the Argentinean Francisco Cerúndolo are confirmed for the first edition of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) at América at Sul. The tournament will be played between the 16th and 18th of July at Ginásio at Maracanãzinho, on Rio of Janeiro. Além of the duo, the organization announced this Monday the participation of the British Francisco Cerúndolo0 and the French Francisco Cerúndolo1. In total, eight athletes will compete for a total prize pool of 1.2 million dollars, the equivalent at around R$6 million at the current price.

The competition marks the return of Nick Kyrgios to the courts after a period away from the professional circuit. The Australian, who was already 13th in the world rankings and was a Wimbledon finalist in 2022, did not compete regularly in 2025. The announcement of his coming to Rio comes at a time when the tennis player is preparing his official return for the 2026 grass season. Kyrgios is known for its aggressive style and constant interaction with the public, characteristics that align with the entertainment format proposed by the UTS league.

First confirmed names and ranking highlights

Francisco Cerúndolo arrives at the event as the best-positioned athlete in the ATP rankings among those announced so far. Ocupando ranked 19th in the world, the Argentine has consolidated himself as the best South American today after winning the ATP 250 title this season. Sua presence reinforces the regional appeal of the tournament, which seeks to attract fans from neighboring countries to the capital of Rio de Janeiro during the competition period.

British Cameron Norrie also has a history of success on Rio soil, having beaten Rio Open in 2023 by defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Atualmente in 24th position in the ranking, Norrie brings the experience of a title of Masters 1,000, won in Indian Wells. Frenchman Ugo Humbert, 34th in the world, completes the initial list of foreigners. Esta will be the first time that Humbert will play professionally at Rio Open0. The European tennis player has accumulated seven ATP titles in his career and is recognized for his speed on the court.

Dynamic format and millionaire prize on Maracanãzinho

The UTS proposal, designed by French coach Patrick Mouratoglou, deviates from the traditional standards of world tennis. The event no Maracanãzinho will have specific rules to speed up the pace of the matches and increase spectator participation. The aim is to create an atmosphere similar to that of football stadiums, allowing fans to express themselves freely during ball exchanges. Outros Four names should be revealed in the coming weeks to close the list of competitors.

  • Total prize pool of 1.2 million dollars (R$ 6 million)
  • Sets with a fixed duration of 8 minutes each
  • Use of “bonus cards” that can triple the point value
  • Fans allowed to shout and move during the plays
  • Players use nicknames and microphones on the court

The tournament structure aims to attract a young audience and new sports consumers. Segundo Mouratoglou, the combination of elite athletes with a great entertainment environment is what sets the Brazilian stage apart. Ginásio of Maracanãzinho, a historic venue for major sporting events in Rio of Janeiro, was chosen for its ability to create a closed and vibrant arena for the three days of intense competition in July.

Expectations for the return of Nick Kyrgios

The presence of Nick Kyrgios is considered the organization’s main commercial asset for UTS’ debut in the América of the Sul. The tennis player promised Brazilian fans a unique experience, highlighting that the gym environment will allow for an emotional connection different from that which occurs in tournaments in the Grand Slam or the Masters series. Para Kyrgios, fans’ freedom of expression is one of the pillars that make the league’s format attractive to players who prefer a less rigid atmosphere on the court.

The Australian’s schedule indicates that he will use the exhibition at Rio as a fundamental part of his physical and technical reconditioning. Após spend much of 2025 focused on treatments and recovery, the athlete sees the reduced format of the UTS as an opportunity to regain his competitive rhythm without the excessive wear and tear of five-set matches. The event organizers hope that the media appeal of Kyrgios will help sell out tickets for the night sessions at Maracanãzinho, which traditionally feature the highest-rated games.

History of athletes in Brazilian competitions

The list of names confirmed with Brasil varies between consecration and absolute debut. Enquanto Cameron Norrie has already lifted an important trophy on the clay of Jockey Club Brasileiro, Ugo Humbert will make his first visit to the country. Essa Diversity of experience is a league strategy to balance the technical level between specialists on different surfaces. Embora UTS is played on a fast court, Cerúndolo’s versatility and Kyrgios serving power are highlighted by experts as decisive factors for success in Maracanãzinho.

The confirmation of Cerúndolo also meets a demand for continental representation in an event on a global scale. Sendo the current champion of Buenos Aires, the Argentine is experiencing the best moment of his career in terms of consistency. The organizers’ expectation is that the friendly rivalry between Brazilians and Argentines will contribute to engagement on social networks and the sale of hospitality packages. Tickets for the event have already started to be sold, with prices varying depending on the proximity to the court and access to exclusive areas for interacting with the athletes.
