The Netflix series Senna, released on November 29, 2024, has put Lilian Vasconcellos back in the public eye. She was Ayrton Senna’s first and only wife and spent decades away from the news. Searches for her tend to rise around March 21, the birthday of the three-time world champion.

The couple married in February 1981, at a turning point in Senna’s international career. Their marriage ended in 1983, and the series revisits that stage of his private life, before his rise to Formula 1.

When March 21 comes around, Senna’s memory brings his wife’s name back alongside his. The series revived questions about their relationship and about the details left out of earlier accounts. For decades, Lilian chose a private life and built her own career while the Senna legend grew around the world.

How she built a life away from the cameras

After the divorce, Lilian stepped back from the press and from the fame surrounding her ex-husband. She repeated that choice on more than one occasion. As a result, she protected her privacy and built a professional identity separate from the driver’s legacy.

Design became her calling, with interior and exterior projects. For her, creative work offered a path of her own, far from the pressure that comes with living in the spotlight. In a 2010 interview with Brazilian media, she described herself as an interior and exterior designer.

A year in England shaped the early marriage

When they married, Senna was taking his first steps in international motorsport and looking for room in European competitions. The couple moved to Norwich, in England, where the driver would be close to the circuits and teams on the continent.

That period brought strong partnership and mutual learning, despite the difficulties of living in a foreign country. Lilian looked after the home and the finances, which let the driver focus fully on his racing career.

The marriage, though brief, gave Senna a stable base during a transition phase. It offered him the calm he needed to pursue his goals without distractions.

She denied Nelson Piquet’s claim the marriage was annulled

In 2020, Nelson Piquet commented on Senna’s marriage and suggested it had been annulled. His remarks drew attention and raised doubts about the marriage’s validity and about possible infidelity.

Lilian rejected the claims and said the marriage was never annulled. She said the relationship was marked by love and mutual respect. In her words, “I have all the documents, I don’t owe anything to anyone.”

Her response settled the matter for the public. Her words also reinforced the memory of an important period in Senna’s life.

For the driver’s biography, the episode helped close doubts about the legitimacy of the marriage. With Lilian’s position on record, the discussion stopped being based on speculation.

Alice Wegmann plays Lilian in the Netflix series

The Netflix production showed the emotional side of the driver, often overshadowed by his sporting achievements. Lilian appears as a central character in one episode, which humanizes the idol and reveals a more intimate side of his trajectory.

Actress Alice Wegmann plays her, while Gabriel Leone plays Ayrton Senna. Fans and critics praised the sensitive approach to the relationship, which they saw as a way to understand the man behind the myth.

Design work and privacy after the 1983 divorce

Lilian built a solid career as a designer, without seeking media exposure. After the divorce, she put her energy into work and strengthened her projects in interior and exterior design. That path gave her an identity of her own, independent from her ex-husband.

Over the years, she expressed gratitude for her time with Senna but kept her preference for private life. In 2010, she said she felt upset at not being included in a documentary about the driver. Her decision to stay reserved let her rebuild her life without the constant scrutiny that surrounds people close to public figures.

Her role in Senna’s rise to Formula 1

Even with the short marriage, her role in Senna’s life during a decisive period is recognized. Emotional support and partnership gave the driver a base to face the early challenges of international motorsport.

Senna died on May 1, 1994, at age 34, during the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Italy. The March 21 birth date remains the reference for those who look into the story of the couple.
