Amar Dedić has great responsibility this Friday (12). The 23-year-old right-back, from Benfica, should be a starter for the Bosnia and Herzegovina team in their debut against Canada, at BMO Field, in Toronto, in the first round of Group B of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Born in Zell am See, Austria, he opted for Bosnia and established himself as one of the talents of the renewal that returned the Zmajevi to the World Cup after 12 years.

Dedić is going through an excellent phase in Portugal. In the 2025/26 season in the Primeira Liga, he played around 35 games, with 1 goal and 4 assists, standing out for his speed, accurate crossing and ability to attack without compromising the defense. At 1.80m, the 23-year-old player has 28 caps and 1 goal for the senior national team since 2022, being a key player in the classification playoffs.

European rise and versatility

After a spell at Red Bull Salzburg and a loan at Marseille, Dedić transferred to Benfica in 2025 and quickly established himself. His ability to also play as a left-back or midfielder offers Sergej Barbarez tactical options. He represents the team’s cultural mix, with Austrian birth and Bosnian roots, inspiring young talents like Esmir Bajraktarević.

At 23 years old, Dedić has the ambition to shine in the first World Cup since 2014. His presence on the right flank will be crucial to containing the Canadian attack and supporting the advance with Ermedin Demirović and Samed Baždar.

Canada will face dynamic full-back

Canada, 30th in the FIFA rankings and co-hosts, arrives without Alphonso Davies and with speed on the flanks of Tajon Buchanan and Liam Millar. Bosnia, 64th in the ranking, will depend on Dedić’s balance to neutralize threats and explore counterattacks in the group that still includes Qatar and Switzerland.
