Engineers develop stable, ultra-fast charging sodium battery
Researchers have created a new design for sodium metal batteries that can complete a full charge in just four minutes. The advance solves one of the biggest problems with this type of technology, which is the rapid degradation of internal components, allowing the device to maintain its energy retention capacity for several years of continuous use.
Sodium appears as one of the main alternatives to lithium, an element widely used in today’s electronics industry, due to its abundance in the Earth’s crust and its significantly lower cost. However, previous metallic versions suffered from the growth of dendrites, which are spiky formations of sodium that cause short circuits and catastrophic failures in the system after just a few cycles.

Carbon intercalation solves internal degradation problem
To overcome this technical barrier, the engineering team developed a textured blanket of carbon nanotubes that regulates the flow of ions. This structure prevents the disordered accumulation of metal and forces a smooth and uniform deposition of sodium during refills, eliminating the risk of destructive ramifications.
Thanks to this new molecular arrangement, the battery demonstrated unprecedented stability in laboratory stress tests. The prototype managed to maintain more than 80% of its original capacity even after going through thousands of rapid charge and discharge cycles, simulating a period of real long-term use.
