Messi breaks silence after Argentina’s World Cup defeat: ‘Difficult to value’
Less than a day after Argentina were beaten by Spain in the World Cup final to take second place, Lionel Messi broke his silence on the bitter result.
The renowned athlete, a central figure in the campaign with eight goals scored, used his digital platforms to share his emotions about the events of Sunday, July 19, 2026, on the MetLife Stadium lawn, and throughout the competition.
“I still feel an intense pain that will take time to heal. However, I also keep the positive memories. Of the matches we played, of the total dedication that will last forever, and of the support of an entire nation that, combined with collective commitment, led us once again to the level of the best on the planet”, said the player, who is 39 years old.

“Currently, it is difficult to recognize the merit of what we have achieved, but this team has reached two successive World Cup finals. I am truly grateful for all the congratulations and messages of affection. Once again, we managed to unite the country and share the great pride of being Argentine”, continued Messi, before finishing with a congratulation to Spain for the victory.
After lifting the cup in 2022, the star now has two runners-up finishes, with the setback in 2026 adding to the loss in 2014, when Argentina were defeated by Germany at Maracanã. At the end of Sunday’s game, the athlete showed deep emotion, crying intensely on the field, in a moment that many point to as his likely farewell to the World Cup, considering that in 2030 he will be 43 years old. This scenario of uncertainty about Messi’s future in the national team creates a worrying context for the AFA (Argentine Football Association), which now faces the challenge of planning the renewal of the squad and the leadership of the team without its biggest star for the coming cycles.
