The English FA (FA) announced on 30 July 2026 the introduction of new rules that establish a minimum ten-match suspension for players, coaches and members of the coaching staff found guilty of discriminatory conduct. The measure, which comes into force next season, aims to reinforce the fight against acts of prejudice within football.

Combating discrimination in football gains strength with new rules

The FA’s decision to toughen punishments comes at a time of growing concern about discrimination in sport. Organizations such as Kick It Out have warned about the increase in incidents, highlighting the need for stricter measures to eradicate prejudice. The federation reinforces its commitment to promoting a gaming environment free from any form of discrimination, recognizing that, despite progress, the issue still represents a significant challenge. The new guidelines are seen as an essential step in tackling this behavior.

Understand the changes in the application of penalties

Previously, the minimum suspension for “aggravated breaches” of FA Rule E3.2, which addresses inappropriate conduct relating to ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, religion, sex, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation or disability, ranged from six to twelve matches, with six games as the standard floor. With the update, the minimum suspension is now ten games, representing a significant increase in the severity of the penalty.

The new standards are comprehensive, affecting not only athletes, but also coaches and any individual present in the technical area. The English FA views these “enhanced measures” as crucial to combating what it describes as “abhorrent conduct”.

Factors that can change the duration of suspension

Although the new standard is a minimum suspension of ten matches, a regulatory commission can impose longer punishments in cases where there are aggravating factors considered “significant”. This ensures that more serious situations receive due attention and result in penalties proportionate to the offense committed.

Conversely, in scenarios with extenuating circumstances or when the individual admits the violation at their first opportunity, the commission may consider issuing shorter suspensions. However, even in these cases, the minimum penalty will be six matches, which was previously the standard suspension, and is now only applicable under specific conditions.

Recidivism and the impact on the image of the sport

For those caught committing two or more aggravated violations on separate occasions, the consequences can be even more severe. In these “very serious cases”, individuals may face suspensions of more than twelve matches or even time-based punishments of indefinite duration.

The English FA’s intensification of sanctions sends a clear message about intolerance of discrimination, reaffirming that football must be an inclusive and respectful space for everyone. The new rules seek not only to punish, but also to discourage such behaviors, aiming for a fairer and more ethical sporting culture.
