Coach José Roberto Guimarães, of the Brazilian women’s volleyball team, finalized the call-up of the athletes for the next South American Championship. This tournament, scheduled to start on August 3, 2026, is crucial as it offers a direct place to the Olympic Games for the champion team. After recently winning the silver medal in the Nations League, the team will have the return of three essential players: Gabi Guimarães, Nyeme and Tainara, increasing Brazil’s chances of securing its qualification.
The three athletes were absent from the previous intercontinental competition, the League of Nations. Now, they join the squad again to strengthen the team in the fight for the South American title.
Libero Nyeme was unable to travel to the final phase of the League of Nations, held in Macau, due to the age of her daughter Antonela, who was just one year old. Captain Gabi Guimarães, in turn, was undergoing treatment for an injury to her lower back. The opposite Tainara recovered from a knee injury that kept her away from the court. However, central Júlia Kudiess will not be present, as she underwent surgery to repair a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee.
Training for Brazil’s main team will begin in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, with a focus on preparing to win an early spot for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Coach José Roberto Guimarães will have his players gathered for this crucial stage. The South American Championship will take place between September 8th and 13th, at Maracanãzinho, and the title guarantees the country’s classification for the next Olympics.
In addition to the players Gabi, Tainara and Nyeme, José Roberto Guimarães’ squad includes the names of Macris, Roberta, Kisy, Ana Cristina, Helena, Rosamaria, Julia Bergmann, Diana, Larissa, Lorena, Luzia, Marcelle and Natinha. Among the athletes who participated in the final phase of the Volleyball Nations League, only Maiara Basso was not called up for this new stage of the selection.
