Erin Piacenti, vice president of Bank of America, lost her life on July 31, after being stabbed in the abdomen in Times Square, New York. The incident occurred at the intersection of West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue, one of the busiest spots in the city. Piacenti, 32, a resident of Chester, New Jersey, was one of two people shot within a span of less than 20 seconds by a woman carrying two kitchen knives. The other victim, a 68-year-old man, remains in stable condition in hospital.
Bank of America, in an official statement, confirmed the colleague’s death. “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague. She was a valued teammate and will be greatly missed. Our hearts are with her family and all who loved her,” the institution said.
The timeline of the knife attack in busy Times Square
The episode of violence began around 4:24 pm, near West 41st Street and Seventh Avenue. According to Jessica Tisch, commissioner of the New York Police Department (NYPD), a 68-year-old man was leaving the subway accompanied by his wife and waiting to cross the street. At that moment, Pamela Cisneros, 49, a resident of Queens, took two knives from a bag and attacked him in the abdomen.
Within approximately 20 seconds, Cisneros continued down Seventh Avenue toward 42nd Street, where he also stabbed Erin Piacenti in the abdomen. The police classified the two attacks as random and without any apparent provocation, highlighting that there was no known connection between the suspect and the victims. The first man, a tourist from Rhode Island who was visiting his son in Brooklyn, was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is in stable condition, while Piacenti died at the hospital.
The confrontation with the police and the suspect’s fatal outcome
NYPD officers located Cisneros still armed. For about four minutes, officers instructed her to drop the knives, but she refused. “I’m not going to drop anything. I’d rather kill you both,” Cisneros said, according to Tisch’s reports. She repeated the threat: “I will kill you.”
The police used tasers, but the electric shocks were unable to stop her. Cisneros charged at the agents with the blades, prompting two of them to fire their weapons. The attacker was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The NYPD Use of Force Investigation Division is investigating the case, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani said footage from the officers’ body cameras will be released.
Erin Piacenti’s professional life and the significance of the location of the attack
Erin Piacenti served as vice president of Bank of America’s Business Selection and Conflicts unit in corporate and investment banking. Her education included graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016 and completing Fordham Law School in 2021. Recently, on August 10, Piacenti had celebrated two years of marriage.
Bank of America’s New York headquarters are located at One Bryant Park, just a few blocks from Times Square – a few minutes’ walk from the exact location of the attack. The Midtown region, where the bank has thousands of employees, is one of the city’s largest work centers. In this context, the attack occurred in an area that was part of the daily journey of many who, like the victim, worked for the same company.
The profile of suspect Pamela Cisneros and her health history
Pamela Cisneros had no criminal history registered with the NYPD. However, there was documentation of previous police interactions, related to mental health episodes, in 2018 and 2019. The investigation is still seeking to understand the reasons that led Cisneros to Times Square that afternoon and what triggered the attacks.
Commissioner Tisch classified what happened as “a life cut short too soon by a senseless act”, expressing that the family members face an incalculable loss. Mayor Mamdani added that the victims’ families had their lives “shattered” and that the city will provide continued support to them.
